A defenseman who can skate the puck and provide more offense. A player who can upgrade the PP with his shot from the point. His defense may not be great but its good enough in todays NHL. He is better than any defenseman we have at this current time. Some would say Timmonen is better but hes on his last leg IMO. - stveshdy
Is he a good enough player to have as your #1 defenseman, and to use up what little Cap space you have? I'd say no. What you're getting is a player who is similar to Matt Carle but can score goals better, and is a better PP point man. But is a lesser defender in his own end, and is even less physical then Carle is. That's not the type of player that I want to build my defense around. If we had a true #1 and the Cap space to add him as a #2, I'd be all for it.

Yep. Not complaining about it. just trying to figure out the reasons why it hasn't happened. Looking back at the drafts some of those players I listed were available when the Flyers selected and were passed over. Rod Langway twice. - PLindbergh31
The Flyers have always been a team that utilized a deep defense corps, rather than having an out and out stud-excepting the Mark Howe years, although even then they had Brad McCrimmon, Brad Marsh and, ugh, Doug Crossman. |

Haha I know, some will still find a way to put the kid down. That would be one I'd take over a d-man but that would require being in the top 5 which I'd hope to avoid if possible. - ob18
The only thing I've read that wasn't complimentary was that his skating was only average. |

Honestly, where are you getting a true #1? No team is moving one. I would take Yandle right now for Schenn. He instantly upgrades this defensive core. The Flyers have enough defenseman who can bang the body. They need a player with the skill set of a Yanlde (puck moving defenseman with skills to be a threat). |

I've heard that too, but still young enough they can work on that with him. |

That's a fair point. But if one becomes available, whether in a trade or in Free Agency. Which does happen. I don't want to be tied up and not have the Cap flexibility to get the player. I'm willing to be patient and get the right player. I agree they do need a player of Yandle's puck skills, and he would make the Flyers better offensively. But I'd rather wait and get the right player.
I'm not against adding a player like Yandle as much as I'm against making him the lead defenseman. |

Hell yeah. If the kid is willing to do the work, the skating can always improve. |

In the 1977 NHL draft Langway was selected 36th. Flyers had two picks before he was selected. |

They have had some very good D-men. Howe is a Hall of Famer. Not being able to draft and develop a stud is my main issue. It's gone on for a long time now. I hope that changes soon. |

I don't disagree with you but isn't Yandle under contract at $5M for awhile? I don't think thats very expensive for a young defenseman with his skills set.
I would love to get Letang but I dont think he makes it to free agency. |

I understand these guys don't grow on trees. It's just frustrating that the Flyers haven't had that top young guy is all. |

I think yandle would pair well with coburn (if he gets his poop together) or even grossmann. Granted I'd rather have a player like doughty or subban over yandle. |

I'm just thinking, the availability of #1 d-men in their prime is almost nill. Weber was a unique situation. Pronger was on the wrong side of 30. The closest I can think of is Niedermeyer going to Anaheim thru free agency. It certainly is few and far between. I really can't think of trades involving young d-men who were traded before their prime and turned into the #1 guy. Not trying to be a jerk, but just thinking about the past scenerios.
Chara in free agency also. Ottawa chose wrongly. |

It is when you don't have a lot of Cap space. I don't think it's a bad move, as much as I want to aim higher.

Perry or Getzlaf.
If one becomes available. I want the Flyers to be offering up Snider's testicles. |

You're right. Defenseman are at a premium. But there will be better players available at some point in the near future. I want to add an all situations player. Not a PP offensive specialist. I know it's going to be tough to find.
