I agree. Timonen has been great and I'm a huge fan. But at this point of his career. If that number is true, it's a huge overpayment. - MJL
Charlie O'Connor @THG_Charlie
Timonen in first year of his deal (at age 32): 8-36-44. Last year (at age 37): 4-39-43. Guy wasn't coming cheap.
Anthony Mingioni @AnthonyMingioni
Timonen’s number may seem high. But considering UFA alternatives in summer & market on puck moving Dmen, it’s the cost of doing business. |

Flyers are in a tough spot. Pronger isn't coming back. There isn't squat on the free agent market. A guy like Ron Hainsey is probably going to make close to $5 million/yr on a multi-year deal. If they lose Kimmo, Coburn is the #1 guy. The organization just can't assume they will be able to trade a forward and get a top end d-man.
I can see the logic, even if the payment is high. |

I was hoping to keep Timo @ $3.75-$4 million. If they're talking 6 I'm not sure how to feel about that. |

6 million seems high to me. Doesn't the cap drop next year? Hopefully Panotch is wrong as usual. |

6mil is too high but I can't see why Kimmo would accept 4mil. unless he is looking to give a discount to the Flyers.
In my opinion, he can get more then 4mil on the open market.

No they can't assume that they can. But this could hurt them if an opportunity comes along to trade for the right player.

yep. If he gets hurt before the end of the year with no deal he gets zip. He's a multi millionaire that wants a cup. Lots of older players restructure deals for the team. - jstross
He could also go the UFA route and make just as much money, if not more, on the open market.
Have you seen the UFA d-men list for this year? It's horrid. |

I agree with that. But at this point if he wants 6 or he'll test free agency. Then that's what I'd tell him to do.

The tagging space is what worries me. The cap hit next year is what it is. Even at $4mm, that's a big hit. |

And then if he decides just do that and leaves...then what? The Flyers would be royally screwed.
It's business. I wouldn't expect any of you to take a discount at your work any time soon.
People are over-reacting. This is Timonen, the bedrock of our defense. As long as he stays healthy the cap hit is nothing for now. I see this as move for Coburn as well. Once Timonen leaves, he's the top guy--no doubt in my mind. |

Possibly, I doubt they would buyout Pronger, but maybe forced to in the scenerio you brought up because of his salary being added to the cap in the offseason. I think the Flyers looked at the depth of the UFA d-men and didn't like their other options. |

I agree 100% that money wise he can almost name his price on a 1 year deal. $6 million though leaves the Flyers with $2 million in cap space and a need to sign 3 forwards and a backup goalie. Very little wiggle room. Goodbye Briere? |

I wouldn't have a problem with the Flyers walking away from Kimmo if his demands are 6mil.

They made a little change in the new CBA with regards to tagging space. WOn't help this year, but it will in the future.
Beginning on March 1 of any League Year (2013/14 League Year and beyond), the Upper Limit
shall be increased by 10% for the sole purpose of calculating Tagged Payroll Room.

I agree. If he wants to move again for a million or 2 so be it. Does he have kids? Were do they go to school? |

I'll bet that Holmgren kicked every tire on the planet and found that the asking price on puck moving defensemen was astronomical and decided that rather than overpaying, he'd secure Timonen now.
I'm not crazy about the price tag, but it's a one year deal so they avoid the onerous over 35 implications. Also, they will likely have the ability to utilize Pronger's LTIR exemption next year to minimize the impact. |

I disagree that they would be royally screwed. I love Timonen as a player, and I want him to return, but at the right price. Do you really believe that he is a 6M player at this point? If he continues to wear down physically, and decline even further. Then you're royally screwed with him at 6M. A lot can happen in a year or two. I'm looking at the future. It's not a huge issues because it's one year. But I'd rather the Flyers keep their options open.

Yeah that's nice, but at the same time, this year is where it's likely going to be an issue.
I'm guessing that Holmgren kicked every possible tire, found nothing that he felt was going to work out and decided to make sure he locked up Timonen before he painted himself into a Carle situation. |

It's a lot but it doesn't offend me all things considered. That's what top shelf guys get. He plays younger than his age, is a work horse, and is a very smart hockey player.
Plus it saves us from having to hear the whining and crying that would surely ensue had he signed elsewhere. (How could Homer not sign him!?!?! Our defense sucks as it is and he lets him walk!?!?!?!? blah, blah, blah) |

Can't buyout an injured player. Pronger would have to be declared healthy to be eligible. You have the 10% Off Season exemption.

striking out last yr in the FA mkt is proving quite costly for the flyers if this kimmo # is true... |
