Yeah that's nice, but at the same time, this year is where it's likely going to be an issue.
I'm guessing that Holmgren kicked every possible tire, found nothing that he felt was going to work out and decided to make sure he locked up Timonen before he painted himself into a Carle situation. - Jsaquella
You don't think he was thrilled about the prospect of paying a big chunk of change for Ron Hainsey? |
|
|
|
I'll bet that Holmgren kicked every tire on the planet and found that the asking price on puck moving defensemen was astronomical and decided that rather than overpaying, he'd secure Timonen now.
I'm not crazy about the price tag, but it's a one year deal so they avoid the onerous over 35 implications. Also, they will likely have the ability to utilize Pronger's LTIR exemption next year to minimize the impact. - Jsaquella
def too much...but better than finding out we traded schenn for j-bo |

So is Homer. As someone already mentioned, he probably saw what was our there, or what it would take to get a top flight defenseman and the offer was way too high. As you said, it's just one year. This gives guys like Coburn, Grossmann, and Schenn time to get more acclimated with bigger roles on the team. |

Can't buyout an injured player. Pronger would have to be declared healthy to be eligible. You have the 10% Off Season exemption. - MJL
I don't know the rules right now, so this may be a dumb question. Since he is not on LTIR right now, who makes the decision whether he is considered injured or not? The league or the team? I know it is really playing with the definition of "healthy". |

striking out last yr in the FA mkt is proving quite costly for the flyers if this kimmo # is true... - isaiah520
Can't blame the Flyers for that. They made every effort. Some things were beyond their control. Only thing that you can argue that was, is the Carle situation. I'm okay with what they did there.

He is not on LTIR, but he is on IR, and is considered injured. To place a player on LTIR, the team has to document the injuries to the League. The League can challenge a team's Medical prognosis of a player. And have the player examined by an independent Doctor.

It's a lot but it doesn't offend me all things considered. That's what top shelf guys get. He plays younger than his age, is a work horse, and is a very smart hockey player.
Plus it saves us from having to hear the whining and crying that would surely ensue had he signed elsewhere. (How could Homer not sign him!?!?! Our defense sucks as it is and he lets him walk!?!?!?!? blah, blah, blah) - Scoob

Why sign him to a one year $6 million deal so far out unless Timo is saying get it done soon or I'm out of here? What's the hurry from the Flyers perspective? Why not wait a month and see were things are? |

One year is short term in my view. I'd rather have more flexibility in case the right deal comes along. Glad that Timonen is coming back. Just not happy with the price if it's accurate. |

think i'd rather have carle at his #/term than a declining kimmo at another yr, but maybe i'm too concerned about the future of their d. they MUST draft and develop them. |

Too, Kimmo is making 6.3mil this season so cant really expect him to take a paycut. Seems like more athletes these days arent going for the whole "hometown" discount. These guys know their shelf life isnt very long so make as much money as you can. |

Well, they ca go 10% over the cap, and then put Pronger on LTIR, which eats up all of Timonen's cap hit, except $1.1mm or so.
It's high, but I'd rather pay Kimmo $6mm than $5.5 for Hainsey for 5 years |

His money is gonna come off the books just in time to re-up Cooter and Schenn, right? Isn't G's contract up in 2014 too? |

Timonen's salary for this year is $3mm. I figured $4mm was a fair offer, but the market's got the Flyers by the balls. |

I'm not sure about Carle considering he is making only $500,000/yr less with 5 more years on his deal after this year. I think I like Kimmo for one year. |

Right, so Kimmo's money will be off the books, yes? Or do I have his contract wrong....?
Bottom line is they need to keep a big chunk of the budget open for those 3. Homer's not a fool- he won't forget it. It's good that they're RFA though that'd be a disaster if they were unrestricted. |

Grossman, Schenn, Coburn all have no trades and Mez and Pronger are hurt. Nobody else will create cap space or bring back any value. |

I still believe Homer will trade a young forward (somewhat unproven) for young puck-moving somewhat unproven d-man (Rundblad?-honestly don't know much about him)

Giroux is the only one out of that group that will get a nice payday...Schenn has a ton to prove still and Couts is still very young and developing. I think you will see B Schenn and Couts sign for around 3.5/yr. |
