How much $$ is Ryan O'Reilly asking? Can he play LW/RW as well as C? - Orpik44
He wants a 2 year, $8M deal or a deal at 5-6 years for $16-18M. The average on the longer deal would pay less theoretically because he would get long term but he would want more in years 5-6 because he would otherwise be a UFA.
Matt Duchene is currently under a 2 year contract for 3.5M/yr. That is probably what the team is saying regardign the value of the second round guy fro the same draft year.
It doesn't help that stance that PA Parenteau and David Jones make $4m, and I'm sure O'Reilly is aware of how much cap space is available. It's a mess and frankly he's not worth the money he wants nor the distraction. I would take Toronto's 3rd pick, presumably somewhere between 60-70 overall. For the Penguins, the equivalent would be 2nd rounder. |

If he could play LW/RW well I'd take him for a 3.5 cap hit. The guy is responsible on D and would match well with Crosby. |

Paul Martin has a cap hit of $5M...for 3 years Yet Kimmo is worth less for a 1 year deal???? - uf1910
Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek were both huge UFA busts.
This deal, however, would be like extending Paul Martin an additional year at his current rate if he was starting to have serious chronic injury problems, and was 37 and not 31. And not his team's current number 4 Dman. |

When the team caves (because they suck and don't have a plan) and pays him that, I'll be expecting you to send me some flowers. |

We are pleased by the way Martin is playing this year. His first year wasn't bad as well. Last year he stunk. Eats up a lot of minutes. He's not a bad d-man AT ALL. If you're a guy that only looks at numbers, he's not for you.
Edit: and as I said, If he were signed at a U$3.5-4 cap hit it would be worth every penny |

I'm not talking about that. RFAs generally command MORE when they're getting locked up longer term at a younger age, not less. If they're cutting out the bridge contract, they'll ask for a higher average. |

I would agree with you but then we would both be wrong.
I made the point (in the post which you claimed I pulled the figures out of my ass) that one either pays more for less tenure or less for more tenure with the modification that the longer contract would consume one or more years of UFA status and that the rate would naturally increase to compensate.
What O'Reilly is saying is that he wants to be paid like a Duchene in the short term or more than David Jones in the long term. He's holding out because the Avalanche don't agree with him.
If I'm right about the figures, they're only slightly unreasonable. If they're less than that, using those other players as a measurement, I think he would have been signed by now.

I don't remember saying Martin is worth U$5 million at all but I do know he's better defensively than Kimmo. Martin is probably worth U$3.5-4/year (good value for him). Kimmo used to be good but he's getting old and slow. - Orpik44
You didn't but I used his contract as a reference since you felt Kimmo was such an "overpay" on his 1 YEAR DEAL.
As for the bolded comment, well is about all I have to say
