I agree. There is no doubt that a player of Carle's ability would help this team a lot. - MJL
obviously assuming they're in the hunt at the dealine, a marek-zidlicky-like pickup could be exactly what they need |

I could be way off base, but in two years, I just don't see both Laughton and B. Schenn on the roster. To me, it is pretty apparent G and Coots are the corner stones at center. One of the other two, I think will used to hopefully improve the roster. - ravishingone
Certainly possible. But I think Laughton is a 3rd line Center type. And B Schenn can play the Wing. But I could see B Schenn moved in the right deal.
B Schenn has played a lot of very mediocre games this Season to this point. But here we are at this point in the Season. And B Schenn has more points in 11 games played then Giroux has in 12 games played. Voracek also is 12 games has more points then Giroux.

prob is that almost every team on the plyoff fringe seems to need one. |

I would say Giroux attracts more attention than any Flyer when on the ice. Teams are forcing others to beat them not named Giroux. |

That is the case with every top player in the League. It happens to Stamkos, Crosby, Malkin, the Sedin twins, all of them. If Giroux wants to remain a top player and continue to be a top player. Then he needs to learn to deal with that and still produce. Because it's not going to change the any time soon. And it will be that way his entire career. Certainly getting Hartnell back and getting a line clicking will help. But he needs to be better offensively. To his credit, his overall game has been solid.

Quick breakouts that avoid pressure and create offensive opportunities the other way are very important. That's one thing that Carle was so good at. And that the Flyers miss a lot. And it's affected their offense. I use to laugh when I read comments from the Carle detractors that didn't realize what he brought to the ice. - MJL
They miss him, no doubt.
He was also very good at breaking up plays and blocking shots with his stick. |

G misses Hartnell.
I would like to see someone other then Simmonds on G's line.
They had a little chemistry building with McGinn as the big winger, but Hartnell is ideal.

Is Giroux really on that level yet? Thats my question. I do agree with your post that the franchise guys do make players better and still perform. I'm not sure Giroux is on that level just yet (too early to tell after last season). |

I think teams play against him as if he's that kind of player, but he's still growing into that role. Hence his stifled results. He needs to overcome, I don't doubt he will. |

of course. not talking a blockbuster....and preferably a pending free agent. as mentioned by isaiah though, i'm sure holmgren won't be the only gm looking for such a deal |

Nice to see B. Schenn and Voracek pick up there games. Another solid game for L. Schenn, hitting everything that moves, blocking shots as well. He also made some nice passes out of the defensive zone, as well as skating the puck calmly out of the zone. He's progressing nicely.
Hopefully that goal gets Briere going. 7 of 8 points, solid homestand. Have to pick the play up on the road. And Giroux has to get going offensively. Other aspects of his game have been solid, he's been good in his own end, and teriffic on faceoffs.

nice to see them pull this out, following what looked like the same pattern against florida the other night. nice to see briere cash in after he'd been virtually invisible much of the game. would be even nicer to see giroux get going.
thought simmonds looked decent in his first game back. voracek, schenn, and read also had good games.
d was solid all around.
bryz played well, but i didn't like either of the first 2 goals. big rebound off the draw, and playing the vhs save too early, through a screen, and not from the proper angle on the skinner tally. should have stayed on both feet and fought to find the puck. will be interesting to see if leighton gets in on the road trip. going to need him at some point - can't be afraid to play him.
also glad to see mcginn return. looked nasty. may still have a concussion. these kinds of senseless hit continue to come - the only way to get rid of them is for serious, lengthy automatic suspensions, like 20-25 games for players to get it through their heads they have to let up when another player is in a vulnderable spot. good call by the official, and hope he gets at least 5, but more likely only 1 since mcginn is seemingly uninjured. |

This is where the second line center has to pick it up. Schenn is looking better every game, both of them. |

I feel that this is a case where the team as a whole struggled out of the gate. Not clicking offensively and on the PP. Briere was out to start, Hartnell went down. And I think Giroux has been pressing and trying to carry the team on his back. And has been forcing a lot instead of letting the play come naturally. More then anything like Giroux playing over his head last Season. I think he is still that player, and we'll see that in the future.

Last Season, Giroux certainly was on that level. - MJL
It helped that he had Jagr and Hartnell playing with him. They both opened up the ice for Giroux. This season he really has no help with that part of the game. I think he played at an elite level last season but we haven't seen it done on a consistant basis (year to year) yet. He's still young and is definately heading in that direction and I don't think he will have a problem scoring at a rapid rate soon enough. |

I think the first Canes goal, it was hard for Bryz to play that rebound into the corner. I don't have an issue with that goal. The second goal I'm sure he would like to have back.
I would give Bryz the extra day off. I would start Boucher in Toronto Monday night, and give Bryz the game Tuesday in the Peg. I have zero faith in Leighton winning a game anywhere vs. anyone. |

For all the criticism B. Schenn and Voracek have received (some warranted) both of them currently have more points than Giroux. |

Flyers need to get Hartnell back. Get a player settled into that other Wing spot. And I think Giroux will get going.
