Gervais has been fine overall in his role. He makes some pretty creative first passes out of the zone. He has started off some nice breaks here and there. - MBFlyerfan
Gervais has been decent so far this year. Who comes out of the lineup when Mez gets back? Foster? |

I like Gus a lot. People already know that by now. I just think the kid has the chance to be a very solid defenseman in this league. He obviously has areas where he needs to improve but at some point he is going to have to step up and run with it when he gets the chance. It's his time to prove what he can do. - stveshdy
Like Jsaq says, what is Gustafsson's potential? What kind of defenseman is he? Is he an offensive defenseman? He's not real big, and not very physical. Just doesn't have a lot of tools. I think he can be a decent Pro. But he reminds me of Gervais. |

I think Gustafsson ability to skate (in general) is better. I believe with more experience he will be a much better player with the puck and moving it out of the zone. I also think he will have more upside offensively. Now he is very small and maybe he doesn't improve as much as I believe but I still like his potential. He is still only 24 and hasn't had the experience yet. If he was as good as I say he probably would be playing but the injury has caused him to be behind a bit this season. |

I liken Gus' to be a Gervais but with better offensive instinct if he pans out, which is playing with fire but... Good skater, smallish in size but uses his body decently with an active stick on the defense side, with the ability to jump up and be more of a threat than Gervais. Timonen-lite,and that's very loosely defined. |

I tend to agree. You said that much better than me. |

I think Gervais has been a hot mess defensively since being moved up to the Coburn pairing. He was serviceable on 3rd pairing.
Today, Laviolette shortened bench in third period, benching Gervais and Foster for much of latter portion and going with Timonen-Schenn and Grossmann-Coburn.
When Meszaros returns, I do think Foster is the first one out. |

I don't like Gervais with Coburn, and it hurts the mobility to have Gmann and Foster on the last pairing. |

every time gervais is on the ice I feel like the d is scrambling to prevent something bad from happening. I'm not confident when gervais is on the ice despite some decent play from him. |

Grossmann has quietly been a monster of late, even with Foster as his partner. But I agree, I prefer seeing him with a more mobile partner.
Unfortunately, you can't go with Gervais-Foster as a pairing (apart from fact that both are RH), so there's little choice but to put one with Coburn and the other with Grossmann.

i think we've seen gervais ceiling as a 3rd pairing guy, but if gus gets withstand the rigors of the nhl, he may have more tools. |

Absolutely agree on Gervais, he's a guy where if you don't demand too much out of him, he's going to be a guy you can plug in and forget on that third pair. But they're asking too much with Meszaros out.
I wouldn't mind seeing if Gustafsson can be better than Foster. |

I noticed today that Grosmann was even stepping up in the O zone... I can`t wait til Mesz gets back personally. If he and Gus are in the lineup, I`d feel a lot better... |
