That's the job of the GM. I don't know who will be available. I'm not saying keeping Timonen is a bad move, I just think the $ is high. - stveshdy
The GM has to go see what's available, but he can't get what's just not there. The dollars are rather high, but as a one year deal it doesn't bother me. I can't imagine going into next season with the same defense corps minus Timonen. |

crazy what happens when you get traffic and throw pucks at the net.. want to see it more often instead of working down low to guys on the goal line with horrible angles - dillpx183
Get the puck to the net even with a wrister.. been a good philosophy for years.. |

So I would think our GM viewed the deal as worth it then which is why he made it. - opeth_pa
Have to keep in mind that they're paying him for what he brings off the ice as well.

I understand the premises behind it, I just don't like $. Thats just my opinion. I'm not knocking Timonen. Holmgren made the deal, doesn't mean I have to like it. |

So we are assuming there is no other option? So lets just sign him for $6M? Once again I'm not the GM so I can't say who will be available but their are always options. The Flyers have traded for Timonen, Coburn, Mez, Schenn, etc. So its not like players can't be had. - stveshdy
I'm not assuming there's no other option, in fact I just described several possible options.
How do you know that Holmgren hasn't been out kicking tires as far as trades go? It's not as if he's one to sit back and wait, so I really doubt he's not trying to make a move.
Also, looking at the UFA defensemen, Timonen is the best guy available. If he hit the market, he'd likely get the same amount of money, or maybe even slightly more from another team.
You're blaming Holmgren for not exploring his options, without knowing if he has or not, and then you offer no ideas as to options on your own. |

I hear you, sir. Just offering my $.02. I think I'm more worried at the idea of this d corps minus Kimmo than I am at having $6m on the cap, to put it concisely. |

wristers are way better, shot is taken faster so D isnt in as good position, harded for goalie to see you took it, puck usually stays low. |

If the Flyers are going to continue to use Briere on the wing they might as well buy him out in the summer.

First, I never said Holmgren didn't explore options. Second you or I have no idea what is going on behind closed doors. What ideas would you like me to throw out there? To just assume he signed him bc he can't get anything else is false as well. I understand why he signed him but that doesn't mean I have to like it. |

His aging, mostly. He's lost a step, and injuries could become an issue. He'll be the highest paid Flyers skater next season, I believe. It's a lot of cheddar, and I'd like to be sure we can clear space should a true #1 defenseman become available. |

Agreed. Loved the give and go between G and Nik "Rex" Grossmann too
Cooter has really come alive in the last few games and I think I see Czech and Schenn slowly coming around as well. |

Its frustrating as hell to me. Its been shown over and over again you will get minimal production out of the guy when he is on the wing.
He loses nearly every board battle and cant use his speed.
