What other options are there? You keep mentioning these other options...what are they?

They could trade a ton of assets for a guy, they could sign another vet as a free agent, for close to the same money who won;t be as solid as Timonen, they could trade for a guy on an expiring contract and have to massively pay him next year and beyond, or they could sign somebody to an offer sheet, which will have to be an overpayment or it will be matched-and then they'll lose draft picks.

Is there an option I missed?

- Jsaquella

I think Kimmo has been a huge influence already on Luke Schenn. I like the pairing a lot and look forward to another season of it.

Its frustrating as hell to me. Its been shown over and over again you will get minimal production out of the guy when he is on the wing.

He loses nearly every board battle and cant use his speed.

- flyer_nutter

I'm thinking the thought process is that we have our 3 centers of the future (G, Coot, Schenn), so they may as well let the young guys play through the growing pains and force Briere to get better on the wing. Obviously, we see it time after time that it doesn't translate. Either way, I don't think they'll stop trying.

First, I never said Holmgren didn't explore options. Second you or I have no idea what is going on behind closed doors. What ideas would you like me to throw out there? To just assume he signed him bc he can't get anything else is false as well. I understand why he signed him but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
- stveshdy

Again, not saying you have to like it. I'm not a huge fan of it either. Just from what you were saying, it seems like you felt Holmgren decided to just throw money at Timonen without exploring the other options out there.

In and of itself it looks bad, but looking at all the other factors, there's obvious reasons why it was done.

That's another factor. Guy like Timonen, his value is more than just what he does on the ice, it's what he brings as a leader, mentor and teammate.

I'm not assuming there's no other option, in fact I just described several possible options.

How do you know that Holmgren hasn't been out kicking tires as far as trades go? It's not as if he's one to sit back and wait, so I really doubt he's not trying to make a move.

Also, looking at the UFA defensemen, Timonen is the best guy available. If he hit the market, he'd likely get the same amount of money, or maybe even slightly more from another team.

You're blaming Holmgren for not exploring his options, without knowing if he has or not, and then you offer no ideas as to options on your own.

- Jsaquella

imo to get a #1 DMan in trade most likely another DMan (probably Grossmann or Coburn) is going back the other way. Resigning Kimmo makes that possible IF Homer makes a trade. W/O Kimmo it seems to limit the trade possiblities.

I believe Briere is gonzo at the end of the season as long as they can pick up an effective winger. Flyers will be fine at Center with G, Schenn, Couts and laughton on the 4th line.

I understand that to a degree.

I just dont know how I feel about Schenn becoming one of the 3 future centers in the team. I think for a team that really lacks depth on wing he could be used better there.

A guy like Briere gives you nothing on the wing. If the team wants to put him there for the rest of his career here, buy him out in the summer and use the money elsewhere.

It's possible that they will buy him out this summer, and use the money to go hard after a guy like Perry

I don't think Holmgren just threw money at it. I just believe he's desperate to keep a defenseman of Timonen's caliber around (which makes sense). Will he find another leader or locker room presence like Timonen? I'm not sure. He knows what he has in Timonen and even if he isn't what he used to be it seems Homer was willing to spend extra on the player b/c of other factors than just his play. If a defenseman (of Timonens caliber or better) becomes available I don't think this deal will stop him from making a move. I just think he overpaid on this deal with Timonen. Holmgren isn't perfect but he's backed himself into a corner by not being able to land a top tier guy since trading for Timonen. It hard to get them and he tried with Weber so I don't fault him for that. I like Timonen and hes an important piece but at some point the Flyers are going to have to find a way to replace him.

I'd normally respond to such. But lately, why bother. On Pannacio's thread a poster called L. Schenn a "bag of pucks".

Well, since he's traded for Timonen, he's add Pronger and then managed to sign Weber to an offer sheet.

He probably did slightly overpay, but that's the case with defensemen now-they're a premium price.

There's now way in the world Ryan Suter should be making the kind of coin he's making. Hell, Dennis Wideman is a $5.25mm a year player.

The consensus is that Kimmo would have gotten the same dollar amount if not more on the open market.

This talk that the Flyers overpaid is ones point of view.

if the market says you get 6 mil+ and you get paid 6mil that would say you got paid the going rate.

That's a possibility, but I think the cost for a defenseman is so prohibitive right now, unless it's a roll of the dice on a guy like Lovejoy or Ellerby, that they may well have ruled out a trade, at least for a guy of Kimmo's stature/ability
