Knowing how the flyers operate... I wouldn't be surprised to see Pronger at camp next season "cleared" to play by doctors and pretending to be ready to go just so they can buy him out with a compliance buy out (despite the fact the entire league knows he's done). That would free up $5 million in cap right there. Its just a hunch I have. |

Well, since he's traded for Timonen, he's add Pronger and then managed to sign Weber to an offer sheet.
He probably did slightly overpay, but that's the case with defensemen now-they're a premium price.
There's now way in the world Ryan Suter should be making the kind of coin he's making. Hell, Dennis Wideman is a $5.25mm a year player. - Jsaquella
Don't disagree. |

That's a possibility, but I think the cost for a defenseman is so prohibitive right now, unless it's a roll of the dice on a guy like Lovejoy or Ellerby, that they may well have ruled out a trade, at least for a guy of Kimmo's stature/ability - Jsaquella
If nobody is available or a guy like Streit is looking for too much money I could see them rolling out with the same D core next season.
As much as I would hate it, I am kind of starting to see that the young d-man with "star potential" might simply not be a possibility.
Draft well and hope for the best may be the best course of action. That or offer sheet OEL. |

The consensus is that Kimmo would have gotten the same dollar amount if not more on the open market.
This talk that the Flyers overpaid is ones point of view.
if the market says you get 6 mil+ and you get paid 6mil that would say you got paid the going rate. - ggunky
Just cause the open market says your worth a price doesn't mean you are. That's why there are a lot of players making more money than their true worth. The system is what it is but that doesn't mean you have to pay it if you don't think it worth the price. |

It's possible that they will buy him out this summer, and use the money to go hard after a guy like Perry - Jsaquella
I think it would be great to see them trade Jake and Read for Ryan... then use Ryan to recruit Perry in the offseason. Pipe dream. I know.

The other good thing with Timonen, he's off the books when it's time to lock up Giroux, Couturier, Read and Schenn in summer of 2014. |

But the Flyers must have thought he was worth the price or they wouldn't have paid it.

That's also true. Do you believe Couturier and Schenn are going to command big money? |

I don't think Holmgren just threw money at it. I just believe he's desperate to keep a defenseman of Timonen's caliber around (which makes sense). Will he find another leader or locker room presence like Timonen? I'm not sure. He knows what he has in Timonen and even if he isn't what he used to be it seems Homer was willing to spend extra on the player b/c of other factors than just his play. If a defenseman (of Timonens caliber or better) becomes available I don't think this deal will stop him from making a move. I just think he overpaid on this deal with Timonen. Holmgren isn't perfect but he's backed himself into a corner by not being able to land a top tier guy since trading for Timonen. It hard to get them and he tried with Weber so I don't fault him for that. I like Timonen and hes an important piece but at some point the Flyers are going to have to find a way to replace him. - stveshdy
Would you rather be in Det position? I think everybody would have like to sign him for less but that's not the present reality of the market. Bill made a great point, after the lockout, teams waived the concept of the hometown discount bye-bye |

Simmonds needs to stop turning the puck over at the defensive blue line.
Read loves the southeast teams!

I wouldn't move both Voracek and Read for Ryan...I don;t hate Ryan, but I think some see "Cherry Hill Native" before they see his play level.
