no, the reports were that homer had the schenn deal as a b/u when the prices for puck movers were too high at the draft. burke himself acknowledged that it was a deal in the works for several mos. the fact that we need a puck mover now has nothing to do with me, it's universally acknowledged. - isaiah520
That the Flyers still need a puck mover doesn't in any way mean that Luke Schenn was a backup plan. Holmgren wanted to upgrade the defense. That's not limited to one move! Holmgren wanted to add a player like Schenn in addition to a top #1 defenseman. As a GM, Holmgren is well aware of the costs for certain players well before the draft. Schenn was brought in as a core player and building block for this defense and the future of the team. Not as a backup. I know you don't like the deal because they didn't get what you wanted. Doesn't make it a bad deal. In fact so far, looks like a really good deal. For both teams. |

Gotta remember that the Flyers thought Matt Carle would be re-signing at a discount price when they traded JVR for Schenn and all things indicated that this would be so. Unfortunately, Dennis Wideman got a massive deal from Calgary and Carle knew he should get more than him, so he did. |

Am I the only one who's concerned for Matt Read and his future in a positive way? |

As in he'll get too good and we won't be able to re-sign him, Schenn and Couts? |

I only know what I hear on that. Obviously there was some kind of confusion there as to what was accurate and what wasn't. It's reasonable to assume that Carle and his agent wanted to see what the market was before signing any offer from the Flyers.
All I know is that every deal, trade, draft pick, signing etc. Shouldn't be painted with the same broad brush stroke that if the result wasn't obtaining a puck moving defenseman, then it was a bad move.
In Hockey the Adam Foote's are every bit as important in building a Cup winning team as the Drew Doughty's are. |

The enforcer debate was interesting but to me the game tonight hinges around around how the Flyers deal with the speed of the Leaf's top 6 forwards. Those guys are pretty speedy. The team defense aspect and how the Flyer's forwards back check and help out the D will be a big key.

You've ruined 18 HB pages of nonsense and bullzhite with your intelligent and thoughtful comments. Shame on you. |

Exactly. I personally think he won't become more then a second line winger but he is making a case for himself. Problem is, where will he end up? |

As previously pointed out we made too much fuss over Orr. Like someone said earlier have Rinaldo threaten to run one of their stars. |

I think he'll be a 25 G, 30 A type of guy for a few years. Could hit 60 points. Right now he's a bargain but that doesn't seem like that'll be the case in a few years. |

Bill said in a previous blog the same thing.
He will go from being a great value all around utility player to being a highly paid guy who is essentially a good role player.
He compared it to the Umberger situation where the team wanted to keep Umberger but had to make a decision not to in view of the salary cap and other players who were felt to be the core, needing new deals. |

JVR with 3 G's one of them directly from a Schenn TO. |

I was thinking earlier about just how busy it will be in here tonight if JVR dangles Schenn on his way to a goal. |

I think there's a possibility of that. But I think Read can be a better player in the future then Umberger has turned out to be. He has more potential in my opinion. In my opinion Read can be more then a utility or role player.
