They do sound a bit callous. Of course, I'm sure he's defending Cousins by accepting the claim that it was a consensual encounter, but the charges are very troubling, to say the absolute least.

Lappy's not the greatest English speaker either so I'm sure his translation was a bit off.

i think that was the intention but if i were writing that article i would have been a hell of a lot more careful with those quotes...

Let's be honest, stuff like that has been happening forever. You can't get away with anything now.

is a bit cringeworthy

That's the one that has me scratching my head as well. I'm hoping that he simply expressed himself awkwardly.

Lappy's a good guy. There's no way that came out right. Maybe if he said it in French, it'd make more sense.

I feel like he meant it more like "you can't be making stupid decisions" or "regardless of what happened, there is a a greater level of due diligence on the police's behalf that wasn't there before, which might accentuate the circumstances"

We are on page 6 and not one comment about Shelley possibly having played his last game?

I'm shocked!

I interviewed Lappy once for a sociology class I had. It was via email and his replies were in choppy English to say the least. Gotta figure those quotes were cleaned up a little bit as well.

I don't really think Lappys comments are all that bad. Sounds like an honest assessment. Sexual charges are a lot more common against junior hockey players than you think. Go to theScore.com and look up Jennifer Conway "it's time for hockeys culture of sexual assault to change." There is a long list of other cases and its not just hockey players. Big time athletics on universities have a ton of this. I think now though, it is no longer as easy to sweep it under the rug like it was before. I don't think Lappy was commenting on the merits of the specific case as much as knowing the history, where there are a decent percentage of theses cases that are dismissed for one reason or another.

Even so, they didn't make any passing commentary on the quotes which was good.

Williams for Markov was def a trade for a need, the Flyers were making the Push in 04 for the Cup and Markov was a good D man.

Pitkanen and Sanderson for Lupul and Smitty was also a good trade, they were remaking the team, and Smith was a hell of a Captain for the Flyers...and Lupul was good at times.....and dont forget we got Pronger in return for shipping Lupul out

- Pyzik

I liked Danny Markov when he was here and I'm not terribly sure why he wasn't brought back.

I agree, that his comments were most likely not what they seemed as well as the fact that these cases sometimes get blown out of proportion, but that does not mean what happened with Cousins is excusable or not a big deal. We don't really know the facts as of yet, but these guys need to stop putting themselves in the position for these charges to even be pressed.

So its looking more and more like Hartnell will be back in the next 1-2 weeks.. but as early as next wednesday. If that is the case... who sits out? Rusty?

Hey Bill, What about Tomas Kaberle? I know he nixed a previous deal for Carter and at 34 and 4 mil he's not exactly a future investment. But he does seem to be on the outs with the Habs (been a healthy scratch due to play and that Montreal seems to want to play younger D) and his contract is up in 2 years. He's got a previous relationship with Luke Schenn and was one of the D partners that Luke worked best with. Do you think Kaberle could use a change of Scene? Do you think he could be gotten for a good deal? Do you think Philly could make Cap room? Do you think there is any bad blood or at least enough to stop a deal(between Kaberle & Flyers)? etc. I can tell you he would cost a lot less than J-bo and Yandle.

As far as a backup, I don't think Boucher is a bad option at all. Though Leighton has always looked slow and makes me nervous. Though I wish we could have snagged Marty Biron back.

For the Face off situation, I think we need to have a clinic & practice more than a new player. Hire Joel Otto, he was always good, because he cheats (his words not mine)

As for a big body that goes into the areas and scores, it's the 'and scores' part that we are missing. Simmonds, Hartnell, McGinn, Knuble... we got guys who live in front of the net. Read, Voracek & Briere even do their part. But nobody's getting enough tips and we are not keeping the puck in the zone long enough for the big bodies to pressure.

I think we really need that D, and I hope Meszaros getting back will help that.

The correlation between your screen name and position on this topic are rather eerily unfortunate.

I am by no means dismissing the charges or have an opinion of guilt. Just pointing out some facts. There are in fact bogus charges in the realm of sexual assault like the Duke Lacrosse Case. There are others where the victims are shamed enough to drop the charges which is despicable. Sometimes, but not often enough, justice is served. Just saying IMO truthful comments made by Lappy should be in anyway negatively because they speak truthfully about something ugly.

As far as the name, can't change or would want to (unless it was UT in Austin) where I went to school because it employed some evil subhuman creatures who are deserving if prison justice.

Not necessarily true. At the time of the trade from Tampa, he was hoping to be able to permanently live in Florida and not have to relocate his family again. The Flyers made an agreement with him that if he finished out the year in Philly (with his family remaining in the Tampa area), the club would help him get back there assuming the Lightning wanted to bring him back.

After the season, Holmgren made good on his promise by trading Prospal's rights back to Tampa so they could sign him ahead of the start of free agency.

Circumstances have changed since then. Prospal was no longer in the Lightning's plans by 2009, and he got bought out after signing a long-term contract (which he thought would let him finish his career in Tampa).

At that point, he had the choice either to relocate the family again or end his career. He chose the former.

Now he's been in Columbus for a season-plus after two season with the Rangers. Given that he has a no-movement clause, he may or may not be willing to go somewhere as a rental player. I don't think he'd mind Philly (though I have no way to know for sure) since it's already a familiar organization to him and the Flyers had previously made good on a promise Holmgren had made to him.

In hockey terms, I'm not sure if Prospal at this point would be a big help to the Flyers as a second-line guy to play with Briere again. The problem in playing them together even the first time around was that neither is strong defensively; although they did have some offensive chemistry together.
