I don't think there were other options, besides a trade. Timonen had all the leverage in the deal, which is probably why the deal is higher than we'd all like. - feelingkettle
I agree. Still don't like the deal. |

Well, unfortunately when you go for the big guys, you also run the risk of striking out. It does help to have a back up plan, but it seems like those went elsewhere. Which is partially why they are where they are right now. - feelingkettle
Yup. Swung and missed now we have to deal with it. |

Bryzgalov has been better but they find ways to blow it. They don't take care of the puck, that has been killing them all season. Now with kimo down this just went from bad to utterly horrible. - JoeRussomanno
Let's see what Timonen's issue is. I'm not going to panic and overreact. This team is not playing as well as it can. We're seeing glimpses of it. But still only a couple of points out of a playoff spot. Despite the poor start, inconsistent play. And the injuries, they're still right in it.

It was not a successful summer. If you look at who went and who was coming in it was obvious to many they got worse. - stveshdy
Obviously. My only point was that management should've thought a little more about what the plan was if the big guys signed elsewhere. |

I don't like it either, but it's better than not having him next year. The D is scary enough with him. |

Overpaying, and signing way too quickly again. Why not wait? What's the rush.

no use sounding like a broken record, but reviewing this thread is very revealing, because the construction started right here:

He's a solid player even at his age but I didn't see the need to extend him right away. |

Done a good job with first round picks, have basically found nothing in later rounds. - PLindbergh31

Buy the Hockey News Draft Guide and anybody can choose a good player in the first round. It takes some good scouting after that. |

I personally would've waited to see how Timonen held up this year. But his price wouldn't have likely gotten cheaper later. |

Mcginn has promise, but he's played what 12 NHL games, Rinaldo is a borderline NHL player. |

Maybe not. 6 million on a player in decline, who has had some serious injuries the last few years is highly questionable imo. |

Rinaldo isn't a borderline NHL player. He's in his 2nd Season as a regular. And McGinn looks like a solid NHL player, and isn't showing any signs that he doesn't belong. This is just another case of ignoring the facts, so you can criticize Holmgren. Same way that you omitted that Holmgren got veteran forward help when Hartnell went down. Just as Lamariello did

But yet at the same time you're panicking about having to play with out that same player in decline.
