That's what bugs me and ultimately keeps me from blaming Laviolette. Got to think if adjustments work from time to time, that it's the players not executing. - Jsaquella
I'm not ready to kill homer. This is the second rebuild of his tenure, the last one made it to game 6 of the finals without a goalie...
I don't know about Lavy it seems in games like Winnipeg he adjusts then last night I don't know if he's to blame because the team stops forechecking and starts feeding the opposition the puck in the high slot. - JoeRussomanno
I don't know if it's that they stopped forechecking. I think this team, because it has a lot of youth, is a little fragile mentally. I wrote about it after the first period, how the pressure and success they had in that period, was contagious. They fed off of one another, and really got on NJ. Now you know that NJ is going to answer back. So right out of the gate, Broudeur makes one if his patented passes up ice and they get an early goal, and that deflated the Flyers. They kept dumping it into where Broduer could get it and outlet it up ice. That took away a lot of opportunities to pressure the puck. Then the Flyers start thinking about it too much. If you're going to play Laviolette's style, it has to be balls to the wall, full speed ahead. Or else it simply doesn't work against a good team. The Flyers played well enough to win. They needed Bryzgalov to make a few saves. That's the way it's going to be with this team under this Coach. They're never going to be great defensively team wise. There was a real fine line last night between a 5-3 loss and a 3-2 win.
I was upset when we lost Carle anddo believe he got a bad rap here.. I thought Tampa overpaid him, but seeing how coveted dmen of his skill are now, maybe he isn't. - Hextall271
I think some people have this perception of Carle as a top puck mover with a solid defensive game. I think he's overrated in both regards. Unlike most top puck movers, he rarely skates the puck out, instead favoring high-risk passes from deep in the zone to either his D partner or a streaking forward. He also gets beat on D more often than you'd like to see, usually from making a soft play on the puck instead of a solid play on the body. It's easy for some to look at the situation on D right now and say "oh, we should have kept Matt Carle", but that's rear view mirror analysis. If everyone stayed healthy most of those people wouldn't be missing him. Personally, I don't miss him, even with the injuries. Besides durability, Carle didn't really bring anything special or do anything a few others on the team aren't capable of. Coby, Timo, Grossman, Schenn are all capable of making a first pass or skating the puck out. Carle is/was not any order of magnitude better than them in that regard. He's just not worth the capspace on the deal he got and if that's what it would have taken to sign him, like Homer, I'd pass too. There are other guys out there that can move the puck better, for cheaper.

I blame the GM and the coach. The GM, because he ultimately failed to get it done, and the coach for not adjusting his system. A great coach will adjust what he's doing to suit the players on hand. - Jsaquella
havent they made adjustments from last yr or do you mean in-game?

Only thing about this that I don't buy is this team can't be good defensively under this coach. They were at times in 2010, stretches last year and I thought a few games this year like the second game with Tampa and Winnipeg

You can have any opinion you want on a player. But when you make statements that Carle isn't any better then Grossmann, Coburn, or Schenn are in moving the puck. Then it's obvious that there is a clear bias of the player. Your entire post is hyperbole and isn't accurate of Carle as a player. Quite simply if your analysis of Carle as a player was accurate. Steve Yzerman isn't signing him to that deal. And Boucher isn't stating that Carle along with Salo has transformed the TB defense. And they aren't playing him 20+ mintes a night. Because the player you're describing is a run of the mill 12-15 minute a night 3rd pair player. And if there are other players out there who can move the puck better that are cheaper. Where are they? Who are they?
The facts are clear. The play on the ice and the issues the Flyers have in moving the puck to the forwards is clear evidence of how they greatly miss Carle in that regard. The only way that conclusion can be escaped from is to simply be in denial.
And as far as the Youtube videos. You can find them for every defenseman who ever played. And you just have to go back to last night to find one for Kimmo Timonen.

They have been at times and for certain games. But historically, the teams under this Coach haven't been top defensive teams. When Carolina won, they got great goaltending. They just don't play a style conducive to it. As aggressive as he wants to play, it leaves them vulnerable to teams that can handle it and counter attack.
No that wouldn't be as bad, which makes me lay some blame at the coach - Jsaquella
I hope I'm not making some think that Lava is blameless or somehow a "Teflon coach," but if he is trying to make or is making changes then they're not being carried out by the team. That could be a message not being received, a message not being delivered properly, or a message that is not being transliterated properly by the team's core - like Primeau and his core did with Hitch's message prior to the 2004-05 lockout.

I sure don't miss these kinds of plays:

Kindly name them. How many of them are capable of setting up guys on the team like Carle was in the O zone - let alone have other teams have to respect him because he not only could pass the puck out, he could skate it out?
