Yeah and Voracek ATOI is a tick over 16 minutes. Brayden Schenn with even less - 15:22. - Pixote Andolini

but, if it's close, build a team. don't run away from a need because a guy is 1 or 2 slots better than another on your board. and if you think that just selecting forwards and then having to trade them for premier dmen is the same as being able to draft and develop your own blueliners, you're out to lunch. - isaiah520
I don't care how close it is, take the best player available, regardless of position in my opinion. And trading a quality forward asset for a need at another position, is the same result. Drafting that player yourself doesn't make the player any better, or gain you any points on the ice. A good player is a good player, regardless of how you obtained him.
When Boston won the Cup with a team largely put together through trades and Free Agency, they got to skate around with the same Cup as a team that built mainly through the Draft. And one of the 5 players they drafted, Seguin, was obtained by trading Kessel. |

I disagree. Even if Briere lights it up in the playoffs, it's smart to plan for the future.
The biggest issue is, specifically, that they have Giroux, Schenn, Couturier and Briere, all of whom play better at center. If all are back again next year, one has to move to wing, again.
Me if it comes down to that, I'd rather buy out Briere and go after a Perry with the savings. The cap drop is as much a factor as anything else, too. - Jsaquella
Once again, good point but unless you trade for Perry, this scenario happens after this season. I'm all for getting Perry, but does he resign with ANA ? Will someone trade for him and offer more ? If he's a UFA contract offers are going to be insane, etc ...
A lot of unknown variables in play and how can one plan for that ? It's simple, if the Briere cap hit can be put to better use on another player that's available and can make your team better, you contemplate the buyout option when the scenario presents itself.
As of now, concentrate on your team, adjust/adapt and try and win freaking games.

Agreed absolutely. Any buyout is obviously down the line. A lot can change between now and then.

Doesn't have to be Perry, but it removes a $6.5mm cap hit off your roster for a guy that either forces you to play him out of position or forces you to play one of your young skilled players out of position.
Simply discussing whether or not to buy a guy out isn't going to impact anything they do this year. |

The purpose of Bill's blog was to state that the Flyers need to do a better job in drafting and developing players at certain positions. I agree with that and have no need to read it again. But I don't recall reading that drafting a top defenseman yourself, makes him a better player then if you obtained that player in another manner. So maybe you need to read it again.
Secondly, a few years ago, when the Flyers had Pronger, Timonen, Coburn, Carle, Meszaros, and O'Donnell, and everyone was raving about the Flyers defense as being among the tops in the League. Were you saying it's not a good defense because the Flyers didn't draft and develop any of them?
So I'll again reiterate my two main points. A good player is a good player, regardless of how you obtain him. And Holmgren has shown he can obtain quality defenseman and build a good defense. Give the guy a chance. |
