yeah, pretty sure Doughty's skills didn't erode overnight, and L.A's getting burned by overpaying for an average goaltender. - bradleyc4
Hard to win an arguement if there is an excuse for everyone else and non permitted for our guys. |

Briere in his career as a Flyer has never come close to his Sabre's numbers which got him his huge contract. The only year he was over a point a game was his final year as a Sabre in which he recorded 95 points. The Flyers awarded him a monster contract based on that year. His best year as a Flyers he's recorded 72 points. He came close to the 72 points in 2010 but his other 4 regular seasons have basically been disasters in terms of how much he was paid vs production.
I also know that people throw out how great he is in the postseason as a goal scorer but people dismiss how bad the defensive side of his game is in the playoffs. If you are constantly looking for the long breakout pass instead of covering in your own zone your offensive stats will be inflated but it won't necessarily lead to more wins. Last posteason Danny scored 8 EV goals in the playoffs. Great huh? But he was on ice for 14 EV goals against. Is everything his fault when things go bad? No, but he is a contributor.
He is one reason the flyers can win high scoring games but lose low scoring games. For what it's worth, in the playoffs (for the Flyers) and using EV strength goals, Briere has been on the ice for 45 EV goals with a mind boggling 14 Goals against each of the last 2 seasons (14 goals scored, 28 goals scored while he was on the ice).
People keep justifying putting up with his poor regular seasons because he can score in the playoffs. I'm not sure that he has ever been that great in the playoffs if you look at his overall game and not just his goal scoring ability. He needs to be protected at even strength so he can focus on the single thing he does well. If he isn't producing regularly on the PP he's a liability. - Flyers_01
First of all, in terms of his regular Season production, you did not take into account the injuries he has had that has affected his point production. There is no doubt that Briere is not a good defender. That was evident as lately as the Montreal game when Briere was leaving the zone early on the breakout, and left his coverage area on the Plekanec goal. But in terms of looking at how many goals against he has been on the ice in the playoffs. It's not enough to just look at the raw numbers of goals against. If you can quantify them to the point of how many Briere is at fault on, then I'd be interested to read that. I think it's easy to be sure that Briere has been great offensively in the playoffs. As he has scored clutch goal after clutch goal. And a lot of big goals. And as long as he does that, you can put up with the liability on the defensive end.

It seems this system would only work if he had players that actually win the battles in the corners. - MBFlyerfan
it's not always the guys who are the biggest. it pays to also have the better stick and most importantly, the most desire. |

couldn't it be argued that he is the reason they're only stopping 85% of shots while he's on the ice? (i think that's something you can only distinguish by watching, and i haven't watched them nearly enough...can't bring myself to) - FlyerMike18
reasonable argument to be made but both their goalies are sub-.900 overall, still, despite significantly improved play lately. that can't really be all because of one player, can it? |

On occasion, he puts himself in a bad position and gets nailed for it. - Jsaquella
He does. He can't stay on his skates which being a center is worrisome. |

definitely not...i only meant if they are worse while he's on the ice (as compared to other kings dmen). likely means that he's out there against the best players though....
i only meant that those kind of stats are tough to interpret on their own. need a lot of context to make sense of them |

It'll be fun to look back at all of these lost points when the Flyers finish the season in ninth place, missing the playoffs by a point or two.
That's always a fun exercise. - bradleyc4
If they win the draft lottery I won't be complaining. |

Huge flyers fan from buffalo. Here's sOme random thoughts. 1st off briere would waive nmc to come back to buffalo. He's still very well liked here. Start there trade briere for like a pysk and and a young grinder. Trade off talbot fedatenko gervais foster Sestito for picks. Trade cooter for either a young stud goalie ie bernier or puck moving dMan is yandle. Trade picks for true number 1 scoring young winger ie perry buy out bryz and pronger. That leaves g schenn Laughton as top 3 centers. That gives the d yandle? Kimmo schenn mez gusty and pysk. Young goalie to grow with young forwards and still young d. Ie like Pitt did with fleury Cindy malkin letang. But no Philly thinks they actually have chance to win cup every year. Guess what no you suck and are not ever going to win a cup again til they realize it. Sorry we are not beating Boston Pitt nj ny chi la sj van in 7 gm series. Yeah we got lucky and got to finals all cards fell right but at end of day chi took it to us and that was best flyers could play that year. This team is headed no where next to that finals team. Go young and stop telling fans cup is goal. I young a damn young team and with the simple suggestions they can do it. Really pissed me off weber yeah homer I want cooter and schenn for weber. No homer dummie should have said cooter 1st and read or something. He could have gotten it done but no. When you have a chance for that dman you take it. |

i agree. small sample disclaimer and all, too. percentages typically even out over time and doughty's +/- will rise and everyone can write, "doughty is back!" |

Just a little bit of advice here. Ignore what your friends say. And listen to what the experts say. You'll be much better off.
