The problem with Bryz isn't the next three to four years but more towards the last three seasons of his deal. - stveshdy
Exactly. When core is hitting prime. So then we are screwed. Huge cap hit and crusty goalie. Same cycle as usual. No cup and rebuild just like with Ritchie and Carter. No thanks. We have to move or buy out bryz. Our core too young to win cup now.

I know. But he had to play that way with the talent, or lack there of he was surrounded with. Iverson had to take 25-30 shots a game and score 30+ points for the Sixers to win games. Eric Snow, Mutombo, Aaron Mckie, Eddie Jones, Tyrone Hill is not a very good surrounding cast. Iverson never played with that other stud to get over the hump. If you look at all the NBA teams that have won Championships almost all of them had an all-star caliber second option. - PLindbergh31
i agree in part, but i think it was the other way around. i think that team was built to allow AI to thrive. iverson was going to take all those shots regardless of who was on the court with him.
he was not a player that could coexist (successfully) with another player that needs the ball. that 01 team was built with an emphasis on defense - because it was clear to brown that iverson needed to put up 30+ shots a game or else he'd be ineffective.
edit: ok my bad didnt mean to get into a whole AI debate here. i will say that watching him play in that game and that entire run was nothing short of amazing - regardless of how you feel about his style or shortcomings
Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is an NHL team. A factor that you omit in your logic. Dean Lombardi spent a number of years putting the team together that won the Cup last year. - MJL
Yeah thru the draft. We did it thru draft and trades. We did it faster. How many #1 picks does la have? Flyers? And our core is younger. Only bad thing is we suck at drafting goalie and dmen? So we get them by the means that you guys are afraid of. Trade a few assets and buyouts free agency. I feel were only a few players and a couple years away but we have to pull the trigger now

What is the time frame from now, when you expect the core to hit their prime? Bryzgalov's cap hit is not huge now, and it certainly won't be huge 3 years or more from now, as Cap hits and salaries escalate.

Bryz is hands down our best player this year. So lets buy him out cause he's ahead of everyone else. And then, even better, let's trade Coots away for a goalie.

Is this WIP? - hereticpride
it's not like we haven't seen goalies in their late 30's play deep into the playoffs before either.

Yeah, because this guy was 29 when this photo was taken.

No, not all through the draft. They added key players such as Stoll, Willie Mitchell, Williams, Carter, and Richards through trades.
You're incorrect in stating that I'm afraid of the means that you propose. What I'm afraid of is the bad moves you propose. I've said repeatedly that I would trade a player like Couturier in the right move. You've yet to come close to proposing a deal that would make sense to trade Couturier. And nobody myself included is against buying out a player, or using Free Agency in the right move.

Fair point. Iverson had the mentality to shoot first, pass second.
For a guy who was probably 5'11" 165 pounds, pound for pound there wasn't anyone better.
Stating that the odds with Bryzgalov are zero is just pulling a random number out of a hat. There is no logical reasoning that you can provide to substantiate that. And it wasn't freakish what Thomas did. There is a whole list of Goalies in their middle to late 30's that have had success in the NHL. - MJL
Yeah right. He had the best year ever and at that age. Bryz isn't in same universe as Thomas. Thomas very athletic all over the ice stopping shots. Bryz is a stone. Hes got maybe 4 to 5 years left of good goaltending. Meantime we have no cap room no top dman no top wingers. Core wasted. No thanks.

Bryzgalov doesn't have to be as good as Thomas was for the Flyers to have a chance to win the Cup with him. Chicago won the Cup with Anti Niemi! Now bryz is a stone! LOL He certainly looked like one today! I know it was against the Islanders.
How long are you expecting this core to take to develop? Longer then 4 to 5 years?
And the Flyers obtaining a defenseman or a Winger is not tied to buying out Bryzgalov.

LA did it through both draft and trades as well. In fact, a couple players they traded for may seem familiar.
Just a quick list of recent goalies young that was said to be going to be good... Price halak backstom fleury ward sNeider rinne niemi Crawford odds are looking pretty good to go get someone young with a little experience sitting behind one of these type young starters don't you think?

Looks pretty good, when you omit the goalies who didn't live up to expectations.

This team needs to add another top shelf defenseman and they're good to go imo. Maybe another depth one. I'm fine with this forward corps going forward just needs to season a bit.
