I favor Schenn more as well. I like his speed, physicality, and offensive upside a lot. I'm glad he is finally starting to show some consistency in his game. Coots has a great all around game and some hockey smarts to boot. At 6'3"-6'4" he could be a beast when he adds some muscle.
Both he and Coots need to win more faceoffs - neither has done well there. - moylander
I like both players a lot. And I think that both are going to be very good players. But if both players reach their potential. Couturier will be a much better player then Brayden Schenn in my opinion.

Identify the following two players:
Player A GP 12 5 points +1
Player B GP 16 5 points E - PLindbergh31
i'm guessing player A is shea weber?
B... luke? coburn?
EDIT: i cheated
i know the big guy is having a rough start, but that's exhibit A for: "normal stats don't always tell the whole story" |

There isn't a big pool to choose from. Timonen is 38. Grossmann and Coburn are what they are. Meszaros has some room to grow. But clearly in terms of future potential. Hands down Luke Schenn.

I wish I could agree. After watching Schenn in the 2010/2011 World Juniors, I truly believe this kid is something special. He carried that team on his back. A team Sean Couturier was apart of. Normally in those tournaments the teams are stacted and the Canadian teams win by committee but Brayden was a clear standout that could translate to the NHL and hopefully someday compliment giroux in important situations. Game on his stick, we pulled our goaltender and we need a goal to force Over Time. This is the player I expect Brayden Schenn to be. A big stage player.
I also feel Brayden Schenn was an important player in the playoffs last season against the Penguins. |

This plays right into why I think that if both players meet their potential, Couturier will be the better player. You mention important situations. Is needing a goal late in the game the only important situation in a game? Later in his development, needing a goal, Couturier, same as Schenn, is likely going to see icetime in that situation. Both will and already do play the PP. How about when the team is up a goal late in a big game? Couturier is likely to be double shifted, while Schenn sees his icetime reduced. How about on a key penalty kill? Who is going to be out there? Or how about while also providing offense, who is going to be matched up against other teams top lines? Now don't get me wrong, offensive players like Schenn that can score and are good on the forecheck are important to a team. But unless Schenn drastically improves his all around game. Especially his play in his own end. Which right now is not very good. He's not going to be an all situations player. While Couturier is. That is why again, if both players reach their potential, Couturier will be the better player.

How reduced were Crosby and Malkins roles in favor of Jordan Staal on key situations? Will Schenn and Giroux ever become Malkin and Crosby? Probably not but you can compare the roles and how important we will need Schenn and Giroux to be. Schenn and Giroux will likely to see time together. While Couturier needs time to grow his offensive game, Schenn has time to improve his defensive game. At lower stages of Brayden Schenns career, he was known as a two way player, which is why he was somewhat compared to Mike Richards. |

We'll see if Brayden Schenn can develop his two way game. But he has a long way to go. I assure in key defensive situations and key penalty kills, J Staal was on the ice ahead of either Malkin and Crosby.

Not really. Both Mike Richards and Jordan Staal are all situation players. And known for their defensive work. Right now, B Schenn isn't showing a lot of promise on the defensive end. Surely at his age and experience he can improve in that area. But I don't see him having the all around game that Couturier will have.

Forsberg and Sakic. Zetterberg and Datsyuk. Crosby and Malkin. These are a handful of skilled players who have learned how to play together and part. Both have proven to be dynamic on the big stage. I pray for the same type of career for Giroux and Schenn together. Maybe Couturier can become equally as awesome but we'll see. |

I really hope you're right that Brayden Schenn will reach the level of those players that you mention here. But that is aiming very high. All Hall of Fame level players. Maybe not Zetterberg, but the rest for sure. |

Schenn is in his second season. The first he spent the first half hurt. The second saw the entire NHL locked out. Many possible hall of fame players had slow starts to their careers. Joe Thornton comes to mind. Even if Giroux and Schenn become a marginal hall of fame duo like Thornton and Marleau, same rules apply. |

Anything is possible. But I would not label B Schenn as having the potential for a Hall of Fame career. But player evaluations aren't an exact science. And you never know. Let's hope you're right.

The difference, thus far, in their NHL careers has been in display of hockey sense as a defensive player.
Couturier has shown a lot in that regard, being in the right position and making smart plays in his own end. His work against Malkin in the playoffs was stunning given his age and what was asked of him.
Schenn, meanwhile, has not shown the same solid two way play he did as a junior. He's shown the offensive ability, and definitely the physical side of things, but the defensive side has been lacking at times.
Schenn has shown more of the offensive side, especially this season, but he's also been given much more of a chance to display his offensive ability. Spent a lot of time last year playing with Briere & Simmonds and saw more than a minute per game more on the PP last year.
Couturier's defensive abilities saw him get more PK time and lesser linemates, even this year.
Both have show they are special players and have tons of potential. I lean towards rating Couturier a bit higher because he's shown how good he can be as a defensive player at the NHL level. Schenn has to show more hockey sense in that regard, and hockey sense isn't teachable |

Well said. A lot of fans when looking at forwards, only think abut the offensive side of the puck. And how many goals and assists the player will rack up. Instead of the all around game and the other areas of play that are so important to winning. A player that can put up points, while also being able to check any teams top line or top player, and play in any situation. Is an incredibly valuable player in this League. Much more valuable then a strictly offensive player. Unless that player is an offensive superstar such as a Malkin or Stamkos.
