Nope. It's still an just an opinion. But one of a former NHL ref, so it certainly holds more gravity than any poster on here.
Why so sensitive, kiddo? This has nothing to do with your team. - Fosco
everything to do with anything has to do with the Maple Leafs... |

The scum of the NHL diving all over the ice and getting reckless when frustrated with getting dominated by Hossa and the Hawks...some things just don't change - broadstreet11
Did you watch the game? Hawks dove more than the Canucks... |

No, what would the head ref for years know about rules of the game - VANTEL
I'm not saying he doesn't know the rules, but supplementary discipline is different from what happens in a game and how the nhl interprets the rules over individual refs. |

not sensitive, just read through the thread and saw some stupid things said from both sides.
At the end of the day its 1 game so not a big deal whatsoever. Van is deep enough to overcome Hansen's absence tomorrow night and after that all will be forgotten until the next chi-van meeting. Those games are extremely entertaining and I watch them whenever I can. |

Shannihan is the last person that should be handing out suspensions for elbowing. I bet if Hansen wore a Bruins jersey this would never happen. |

No i never said that, but the NHL has the right to interpret the rules as they see fit and at the end of the day it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks, its their league.
I agree with this ruling and I disagree with the setoguchi one. |

Matt Cooke gets nothing for taking out the best player in the league for the rest of the year with a careless play and the guy in the Canucks gear gets a game for a careless play on a guy who is damaged goods. |

The NHL has called it the Luongo contract yet Hossa Kovalchuk and about 15 others including many Hawks
They call it diving like guys like Kesler. I am pretty sure other players dive. Stick your head back in the sand .The NHL does not like the Cancuks/
Chara can take a guys head and pile drive it into a stanchion at 40 miles an hour and get away with not one game ,but when a Canuck does something ,throw the book |

I won't even attempt to finish reading all the blathering for 16+ pages by idiot fans on both sides of this. Bad arguers tend to cherry pick bad arguments to pick apart, and the people with legitimate respectable points and opinions get ignored.
Briefly, regarding the hit: the more I see it, the more I believe that it was an accident, but completely avoidable. In fact, if Hansen throws his hip at Hossa instead, we're all talking about what a beautiful hit he made. Instead, he makes a poor decision to reach (whether you believe that's what he was doing or not is irrelevant) too high with a bent arm toward a puck that is out of his reach and hits an unsuspecting player.
Now here's where I take issue with the author, the commenters, and Hansen himself. Instead of saying "this play is dirty" or "this play is clean" you should all be saying "this play was stupid, avoidable, and shouldn't have happened." He should have said "I made a dumb play, I hope he's okay." But this isn't what happened. Instead, people want to talk about how okay or not okay the play was, and Hansen himself shrugged it off and pretended he didn't know he made contact with the guy's head.
And that's what drives me insane about this Canuck team. Man up and take responsibility for what you've done. There's a reason that this team has a league-wide reputation for being bad guys, and it's because they go about their business thinking everything they do is okay, and with justification. No contrition, no admission, just "well it's okay because it was a hockey play" or "he got our guy first, so we were standing up for ourselves," or my favorite, "he's a scumbag, so it's okay to take cheap shots at him because he does it to us."
Change the culture and conduct of the team and (some of) its fans, and the league might change their perspective too. As a hockey player myself, I completely understand what it's like for some guys to get vilified for their play on the ice, but it's their conduct after the fact that defines the class of a player and a team. - Sandus
Oh get lost... |

he led with his elbow. no intent but need to be responsible for your actions. 1 game is a fair penalty imo. - sens rock
I agree with you, but the consistency with the suspensions/fines is terrible right now. Setoguchi cross checked a player in the face and gets a fine. That's what Canuck fans are upset about right now. Most would agree that if you Jannik one game. With that in mind, Setoguchi should have received at least one game - at the very least. |

The true test with this suspension is if the league will be consistent. If they are going to suspend everyone for head shots (less games for incidental, more for malicious/player history) and set this as the tone for the league, then fine. If history has anything to say about it the suspensions will have more to do with the names on the front and backs of the jersey. Some teams are going to get more calls to their benefit and more leeway with hits, others are going to get punished more. I am a Canucks homer, and I have always felt we have gotten shafted by officials, and the league does not care how Canucks do because our fan base will keep supporting them. |
