"Now I'm not picking on Hossa here, I do think he did get his bell rung and that he wasn't just trying to sell the call (please do not get mad Hawks fans, this is not a shot at Hossa. Hossa is awesome)"
Oh come on, he's not Kessler. |

Except that's not true and he's never been once marked as a flopper.
Kesler on the other hand - not even the most biased Canuck fan can admit that NOT to be the case. |

I like to think that just as Hansen elbowed Hossa in the head he screamed "Up yours Duncan Keith! Paybacks a female dog!" Then after the game Dan Sedin gave Jannik a high 5 and said "About time someone put a Hawk pansy out for a couple games."
But thats probably wishful thinking.
What probably happened is Jannik went for the puck saw Hossa's head in the way and thought "Oh well." oops. - Gusnone

or the Sedin on Dustin brown Elbow, or Bertuzzi riding Moore head first into the ice, or the slash on a player returning to injury removing him from the game (Hansen on Bolland), or Hansen elbowing a player between him and the puck in the back of the head. All could be considered intent to injure. I believe the point that was raised earlier was that a lot of these "questionable hits" seem to be dished out by Canuck players - ikeane
I find it quite funny that fans seem to think their team is so squeaky clean. How many times has Carcillo been involved in brutal hits during his extremely short tenure in Chicago. playoffs last year - but I'd take either one of those guys in a heartbeat. Look at the playoffs last year for Chicago - a few questionable hits as well - boarding penalties etc.
Look at this beauty.

Keith's hit last year was far worse than last night. Do I think Keith is a dirty player, no. He had a lapse in judgment and acted like an a-hole. Just like Webber in the playoffs. Sedin on Brown was bad as well.
Truth of the matter is over the past few years, every team has had some players act like DB's. The incident last night is questionable. I'm not too sure how I feel but I'm sure it's neither black or white. No one is questioning players like Toews and Sharp - I'd take them over the Sedins any day. No one, including the blogger think Hossa dove. That would be asinine. Hossa is one of the best complete players in the league and no one would ever call him a diver. Bringing up the Bert/Moore incident - The coach and the player were sent packing. It's irrelevant now. Should the B's be looked at in the same light because of the McSorley chop to the head? No-It's the past.

Ryan Kesler is one of the most hated players in America!
Unless, of course, he's playing for America. In which case, Ryan Kesler is one of the most loved players in America! |

That's 100% true. I love most of Kesler's game but the diving makes me want to pull my hair out. Lapierre and Burrows have really changed their game.

Kesler regardless of the flopping IS one my favorite players. I wish the Hawks had him. |

I enjoyed TSN's story on the hearing where they said that while Hansen has never been suspended in the NHL, he did receive a one game ban from the IIHF in the world championships for a hit from behind. He's clearly a monster. - nucks_94
Excellent sleuthing by TSN - way to dig up the dirt and sully Hansen's reputation. |

poll on TSN- 61% of people say no to a suspension.
If I'm Gillis, that's all I say to Shanny.
"The majority of fans say no Shanny. Do you really want to piss off fans after you just locked them out of the game they love for no reason? Do you you want to be that guy?" |

Someone offered me Matt Moulson & Logan Couture for him. I just about pissed myself! |

And how does that play into the conversation of the hit I posted as being incredibly dirty by the same player who enacted a hit last night that was dirty? |

Really? Quoting a canadian based network who is more then likely bombarded by moronic Canucks fans like yourself? Should Bowman have Comcast run a poll and then when it comes out 90%+ he should be suspended, should he then call Shanny as well?
And you are the writer for this blog...I feel for this fan base. Enjoy another flame out by arguably the weakest mental team in the NHL since the Blues of the late 90s. |

Kerry Fraser-
Hi Kerry,
I'm sure you're going to be swamped with e-mails concerning the Jannik Hansen-Marian Hossa incident and I would be interested in knowing your take regarding the hit. But, my main question is regarding the two-minute penalty handed to Hansen after the play ended. Neither referee had his hand up for a penalty and play continued until Chicago regained the puck. (Jonathan) Toews then went after Hansen but a linesman got in the way before gloves could be dropped. I did pick out a punch that Hansen threw, was this where he got the penalty or was it for the hit on Hossa?
Thanks,
Gareth Evans
Richmond, BC
Gareth,
I do not believe that there was any deliberate or malicious intent on the part of Jannik Hansen to hit Marian Hossa in the head as both players went up for an airborne puck that had been flipped out of the Hawks zone by Jonathan Toews. The resulting contact to the back of Hossa's head was not worthy of anything beyond the minor penalty for roughing that was eventually assessed by the referees; albeit well after play was whistled dead for the Hossa injury.
Both Hansen and Hossa reacted to the approaching puck similar to a jump ball on the Bulls' homecourt in the United Center. Both players went up for the puck and in doing so, Hossa slid his body position to the right while Hansen moved to the left. Their focus and intent was gaining puck possession.
The movement of both players put them on a collision course as Hossa had the lead lane and the advantage to contact the puck first. From the back side position, Hansen would have to extend his reach over and past Hossa if he were to be successful in playing the puck. In real time and from a deficient position, Hansen's follow-through contacted the back of Hossa's head as both players moved toward one another and reached for the puck.
The roughing penalty (while justified) was arrived at after the fact because of some residual sensitivity surrounding a missed Raffi Torres headshot on Hossa last year in the playoffs which resulted in a 25-game suspension.
With Hossa laying in almost the same spot on the ice, it was imperative that the officials put their heads together to determine how 'Hoss' got there. The correct call was made on the ice.
It remains to be seen if any residual sensitivity will carry over into Hansen's hearing scheduled for this afternoon with the Department of Player Safety.
Stranger things have happened but I would be surprised if Hansen receives a suspension on this play. I have seen far worse hits that have gone unpunished this season.

Guys: We get it. You are STILL pissed about the Keith retaliation hit on Sedin after Sedin dirty hit Keith. We get it.
But that plays zero into the discussion about Hansen. But, hey.. carry on.

There are generally more anti-Canucks fans on there.
Incase you didn't know, the Canucks are hated everywhere outside of BC |
