Because he's sick of guys beating on him all night every night. Phaneuf started it while play was still going on. Gerbe was letting him know that he wasn't going to take it.

I like how everyone thinks that because Gerbe is small he's not going to try and stick up for himself. Guys take shots at him because they don't think he'll retaliate. He's not going to just let them do whatever they way.

I have no problem with him pushing back there. I just think it's a total douche move by Phaneuf to then start throwing punches.
