Lindros was an animal. First superstar to not be protected by the refs. - stveshdy
I saw him last summer playing shinny on a rink before my crap mens' league game.
Let's just say he looks a little heavier than his playing days.
But I was standing behind the net watching, and he skated back and picked up the puck behind the goal line, spun around and snapped a pass onto a guy's tape that was standing at the opposite blue line. And the snap pass was harder than my slap shot.
You can't learn that. It's God-given talent. |

You really think Schenn can be on that level?
I like Schenn but even if he hits max potential I'm not sure he's in Weber's class.

Let the record show that I was not the one who brought up Eagles fans.
Lindros = physical hockey
70s Flyers = dirty hockey
I get that you won't ever agree. That's OK. Like I said above, if I was a Flyers fan, I'd worship those two cups, too. - Atomic Wedgie
You're going to get exactly zero Flyers fans cop to the 70s Flyers being dirty.
The narrative (justifiably so) is that those early to mid 70's Flyers teams got pushed around and they simply fought back. If anything, many Flyers fans (especially older ones) see the Cup years as vindication against things like the "Big Bad Bruins" (called that because they were erudite figure skaters, no doubt) or the Plager brothers (good choir boys).

I was at Citizen's Bank Ballpark during the Flyers alumni Winter classic.
When he got on top of that puck on the wing before dishing to Leclair for the goal, there was an audible hush that came over the crowd like....."Yup, seen this one before".
He was an amazing player.

Back to back Stanley Cups, and they only put three guys in the HOF, and one of them is Bill Barber?
Hell, the 74-75 Leafs had four guys go to the hall. - Atomic Wedgie
Oh c'mon. Keon got in because of the 60s. Lanny played more than half his career with other teams.
And what the hell is your problem with Bill Barber? |

He may be my second favorite Flyer all time. LeClair is up there too with Hexy. He's probably the best player we have had here since I was old enough to watch them. Bona fide superstar. |

Defensively I think the potential is there to be in the same level. I don't think he will be as good offensively obviously but I think he can still chip in around 30 points. He has a nice shot. |

87 to 93 were the golden years in my experience as I was a kid watching those games and it was amazing. The 87 finals made me a flyers fan. - Hextall271

Yeah, but the hockey in 92-95 was not bad. I watched Hextall closely in Quebec then was ecstatic when he was traded back. |

Lindros could do it all. The guy was amazing. I'm just disappointed that he didn't get the star treatment from the refs b/c of his size and physicality. |

I'm a huge Flyers fan and I'll cop to them being dirty.
Won't I won't accept is someone saying they were unskilled or because they won the league was less skilled than the years prior and the saintly Habs saved hockey. That's complete and utter BS. |

I just don't see Schenn ever being in the class as Shea Weber, IMO. |

He won't be. Not many are. He can still be a very good defenseman though. |

I can get extremely female dogy when it comes to HHOF induction - don't get me started on Mike Gartner being in there (a great player for an extrodinary amount of time - but never one of the best players in the game. To me, longevity does not get you into the Hall).
Bill Barber was a 1st team all-star once, and a second team all-star twice.
Sorry, imho, that shouldn't be enough to get you enshrined.
Here's a funny thing, though:
"He scored 34 goals in each of the next two years, then exploded for a career year in 1975-76 by scoring 50 and getting 112 total points. Along the way, and not coincidentally, the Flyers were winning the Stanley Cup. They became the first expansion team to win in 1974 and took home the sacred silverware again the next year. But the wins were controversial and weren't as admired as previous Cup wins had been."
Do you know where that quote come from? Bill Barber's freakin' HHOF biography! (Please note: bold is mine).
http://www.legendsofhocke...9001&page=bio&list=ByName
That's just disrespectful. I'm happy to argue that the Flyers' cups weren't this or that (hell, that's what I'm doing right now) but even I wouldn't put that on a guy's HHOF biography.
If I was a Flyers fan, I think I'd be firing off an email or two... |

If you want to cop to that, fine, but let's not pretend the rest of the league was a bunch of choir boys at that time. It's intellectually dishonest. |

Excuse me if this starts a riot here among fans but has Bruno really been that much better then Foster? I get why Bruno plays ahead of Foster and Bruno has been alright but he's had some pretty rough games too. - SuperSchennBros
No, I agree. I think Foster's shot from the right point has been huge when he's been in the lineup (still second highest scoring Defensmen on the team). But somehow I think his defensive play landed him in Lavy's Doghouse and I don't seen him coming out anytime soon. Unfortunatly his mobility really does seem to be a factor. I kind of wonder what that 3rd pairing would look like with Mes and Foster. Duel cannons firing from the point. |

Kinda hard for the refs to protect Lindros - he was the guy stirring up all the poop. |

And I think that's why he wasn't "protected", per se. He was seen as being able to protect himself.

Here's my view:
As I stated above, that era was the nadir of skill for the NHL. It was a downward trend, which was not started by the Flyers.
And for two years, the Flyers were the best at winning dirty. Skill + intimidation. |
