I'm a huge Flyers fan and I'll cop to them being dirty.
Won't I won't accept is someone saying they were unskilled or because they won the league was less skilled than the years prior and the saintly Habs saved hockey. That's complete and utter BS. - mayorofangrytown
It is BS. Sure the Flyers were dirty-or at least had dirty players. But there were dirty players throughout the league.
When they beat the Bruins(who had guys named Orr, Esposito and Bucyk) and Sabres(who had guys like Perrault, Robert and Martin) it wasn't by punching their lights out, it was by beating them on the scoreboard.
As for the saintly Habs saving hockey, they beat the Flyers in the Final 4-0, with 3 1 goal games and one game that was a 2 goal game against a Flyers team starting it's back-up goalie. With a healthy Parent, that series is likely 7 games and maybe the Flyers win a third consecutive Cup |

But the wins were controversial and weren't as admired as previous Cup wins had been." - Atomic Wedgie
I think the purists of the day were still harboring unfavorable sentiment towards the expansion teams. Kind of like the new kid moving into town and stealing the homecoming queen from the star quarterback. |

He'll be lucky to be Coburn. - mayorofangrytown
Schenn is a different kind of Defensmen than both of those guys. If he can become the next Adam Foote as advertised, maybe with some better offensive skills, I'll be happy.
For the type of player he is, I think playing solid D and eating up minutes on the top pairing while leading the league in hits is all we can reasonably expect of a 23 year old Defensemen. |

That entire Flyers Cup narrative outside of Philadelphia is like the NHL was a league full of skating Guy Lafleur's back in the 70's.
Just silly and ridiculous. |

I can get extremely female dogy when it comes to HHOF induction - don't get me started on Mike Gartner being in there (a great player for an extrodinary amount of time - but never one of the best players in the game. To me, longevity does not get you into the Hall).
Bill Barber was a 1st team all-star once, and a second team all-star twice.
Sorry, imho, that shouldn't be enough to get you enshrined.
Here's a funny thing, though:
"He scored 34 goals in each of the next two years, then exploded for a career year in 1975-76 by scoring 50 and getting 112 total points. Along the way, and not coincidentally, the Flyers were winning the Stanley Cup. They became the first expansion team to win in 1974 and took home the sacred silverware again the next year. But the wins were controversial and weren't as admired as previous Cup wins had been."
Do you know where that quote come from? Bill Barber's freakin' HHOF biography! (Please note: bold is mine).
http://www.legendsofhocke...9001&page=bio&list=ByName
That's just disrespectful. I'm happy to argue that the Flyers' cups weren't this or that (hell, that's what I'm doing right now) but even I wouldn't put that on a guy's HHOF biography.
If I was a Flyers fan, I think I'd be firing off an email or two... - Atomic Wedgie
That Legends of Hockey site is like the Wiki of hockey information.
If you retire considered one of the best players at your position ever, EVER, I think that deserves more than just consideration to the Hall. He retired the highest scoring left winger in the game, all time.
And if Mike Gartner doesn't get in the HOF than you must hate that Lanny MacDonald is in. |

Are we still talking about Mike Gartner?
Nobody considers him one of the best players at his position, ever.
Hell, he was never named a first or second all-star. He never won a single individual award in the NHL.

Defensively I think the potential is there to be in the same level. I don't think he will be as good offensively obviously but I think he can still chip in around 30 points. He has a nice shot. - Richieattack18
The hope is that Schenn rounds out into something like a late-career Scott Stevens -- but he has a long way to go before he gets to that level. While Schenn is very physical along the wall, Stevens absolutely owned the ice from the center-line on in.
I get the feeling Schenn's going to turn out to be a less rangy Derian Hatcher. Probably still considered somewhat of a disappointment, but valuable nonetheless. |

I don't see Luke Schenn having any chance to being similar to Weber. He does not have that potential in my opinion. |

Sounds as if Meszaros isn't all that close to playing. Still in pain, and hasn't been cleared for contact yet.

Glad to see Holmstrom getting close... they could really use somebody who can win faceoffs on the 4th-line, and it would be great if they didn't have to give up any assets to fill that need. |

No... I was talking about Bill Barber. I have no great love for Gartner except that he was a great player that played on very bad Capitals teams.
However, he scored 30+ goals in 17 of 19 NHL seasons. The only year beside his final year that he didn't he only played 32 games. Nine times 40+ and one 50 goal season. He played his entire career with either Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux skating around. He's not the only goal scoring Hall inductee without hardware from that era. |

Well first we were arguing about the skill level in the two years that the Flyers won the Cup being lower than at any other time in NHL history.
That segued into a shot at Bill Barber making it into the NHL Hall of Fame while purporting the Hall members on the 74-75 Leafs.
It wasn't for another couple posts before we got to the third insane argument that Mike Gartner wasn't Hall worthy while asking me to turn a blind eye to the beloved Lanny MacDonald previously held aloft in the leafs 74-75 part of the debate.
I'm done. Carry on. |

Weber was undrafted heading into junior -- kind of hard to believe in retrospect. Then again, he was just a tough kid with some untapped upside when the Preds took him -- he didn't really blossom offensively until he was already in the NHL. |

I want to know where all those Canadiens players were before they burst onto the scene and shed the blinding light of skill and righteousness upon the skill depleted NHL?
Where ever they were playing before 75-76 I'm just glad they got there when they did. |

I see a lot of similarites on the defensive side of the puck so far -- the physical side fits, the occasional brain-farts are there...
But Schenn's already much better with the puck at the NHL level than Richardson ever was. Richardson topped the 20-pt mark just once in his career, and that included a lot of time during the high-flying 80's and early 90's. Schenn's already done it twice, on some pretty offensively challenged Leafs clubs. He's pretty much on that pace again this season, despite getting no PP time. |

That is one part of his game that I've been pleasantly surprised at. How he handles the puck. He makes a nice first pass out of the zone.

Yeah, and he's keeping up with the play moving up the ice just fine, and he's also pretty smart about when to pinch.
Maybe some of the younger fans on here don't remember Richardson in a Flyers sweater, but that guy might as well have played sans hockey stick because he sure as hell didn't know what to do with one. |

If he can scale down the brain farts just a bit he will be a good top 4 guy. I like how he finishes People along the boards. He just ends it and the flyers end up with the puck |
