Proven? Not many are proven.

A guy like Hiller for example is cheaper. A guy like Backstrom would be cheaper and signed to shorter term deals.

Again though, I dont want to get into this too much, Bryzgalov has time to show what he is made of. We will see.

The trouble is, unless they go out and sign Lundqvist, none of the goalies out there are sure things

If it led to wins, I wouldn't care.

But let's face it, Murray hardly stifled Lindros, LeClair or Brind'Amour

- Jsaquella

that was also a long time ago.

but in fairness, LA was a really good puck possession team last year even before murray got canned. they just had dreadful shooting luck.

It was, but Murray's not an idiot. Yes, he's definitely a D first guy, but he's not going to move Giroux to a line with Talbot & Rinaldo

cringing at the notion of murray behind the bench instituting a 1-4 forecheck and saaaaggggggg and emphasis on blocking shots in the d-zone.
- OrangeBlack27

Murray scares the poop out of me. He had a monster line-up in LA and couldnt get them to be dominant. Took another guy to do it. I dont like that.

He is a real defense first guy. How many real top teams in the league employ that strategy. The Devils, St Louis, and Boston. Just a personal thing, but I hate defense first coaches, especially on a team that has a huge weakness on the back end.

He did not pick Simmonds, Briere, Hartnell for the team: all average/poor defensive forwards, or know that Talbot would slump this bad, or that Roo would not be the best player on the ice for a single game, or that KImmo would be so slow, Coburn regress, Meszy get injured, Rusty/Knoobs be brought in when they are finished...

I just don't understand the early 6 m deal for Kimmo, esp in a year when the cap comes down by almost 10%

No team suits up 18 skaters that are all good defensive players. Defense is a team game. And it starts with a structure in place, and demand for it.

I wonder where they are if you take away the Florida game and the Pens game.

There rarely is.

At the same time, did anyone really expect to have such questions about Bryzgalov when he was signed?

I was kind of worried, but honestly believed he would be that consistent #1 guy.

It might not be the primary issue but it is certainly an issue.

Read out for 6 weeks.
You then have 5-8 players that are contributing nothing tangible offensively

- opeth_pa

Flyers have plenty of offense to be a better team then they are.

Exactly..
Bryz is really the least of their concerns this season.
Priorities need to be a number 1 and hell probably a number 2 dman.
Offensive depth.
Also I want a way to have Harry Z in there vs Fedeteko and Knuble..ITs a minor adjustment but he brings speed and jam.

In my opinion, offense isn't this teams issue.

most nights, they score 2 or less. imho, it's an issue.

showed signs of coming out of that. meanwhile, the defensive issues of last year remain the same.

Chip Kelly!

I'm in.

No more drafting third line centers, or adding heavy legged 3rd pairing FA d-men. Speed kills and I'd look in that direction when choosing.

Imagine where we'd be if Sanguinetti was passed up by the Rags?

I knew he had streakiness, but didn't realize just how extreme it could be. Trouble is, he's also been hung out to dry so often by his teammates, it's hard not to wonder if he's trying to overcompensate to cover for expecting breakdowns.

They have scored, but for a team that is 8th in scoring does anyone really consider them a consistently hard forechecking team or a team that is consistently hard to play against?

They have stretches, but far too often they look like they did in the first and second period tonight.

It's an issue ... but maybe not the biggest issue.

Horrendous defensive zone coverage and uninspired play that can last periods at a time are bigger issues, imo.

Sure, but I suspect that Simmonds and Hartnell would be much less effective, and Briere hopeless if they play a much more tight checking game. The game of the first two is a very north south game, going hell for leather in the offensive zone. Rarely do you see Simmonds/Hartnell backchecking when a puck leaves the offensive zone, usally b/c they are behind the play. Briere has made some improvements but his game is built on open ice and breakaways and behind the goal line. If you have these type of players play a 2 way game, the offense dips further.

ANy chance of getting Getzlaf this summer (after buying out Briere)?

Except all the players I listed have 11 or less points.
Briere has 5 goals the rest of the players i listed have 5 goals between all of them.

I think everyone can agree the lack of a number 1 or number 2 dman is the big issue right now. I just also see there being too many dead areas in the offense also.

Play with the puck more. Spend less time in your own end. Have a neutral zone presence and layers to their checking that creates turnovers and odd man rushes. And they will score more goals. How many odd man rushes does this team get? Team defense is a catalyst to offense.
