The trouble is, unless they go out and sign Lundqvist, none of the goalies out there are sure things

True.

So why spend 6 mil for one?

Except all the players I listed have 11 or less points.
Briere has 5 goals the rest of the players i listed have 5 goals between all of them.

I think everyone can agree the lack of a number 1 or number 2 dman is the big issue right now. I just also see there being too many dead areas in the offense also.

- opeth_pa

The lack of a # 1 defenseman is what is going to keep the Flyers from becoming a top team. It is not why they're a below average team right now. This is about more them just personell.

Im off for the night, but will leave off with this.

If I fire Lava, I do it because I think the team needs a new voice to infuse a culture of hard work first and foremost.

I do not do it, because I think they need a philosophy change to focus more on defensse first.

The first reason is more important to me, and Id hope the organization would see it that way.

Goodnight hooligans!

It's an issue ... but maybe not the biggest issue.

Horrendous defensive zone coverage and uninspired play that can last periods at a time are bigger issues, imo.

- FlyerGuy

to me they're all equally important, and clear reasons as to why they are where they are.

Sure, but I suspect that Simmonds and Hartnell would be much less effective, and Briere hopeless if they play a much more tight checking game. The game of the first two is a very north south game, going hell for leather in the offensive zone. Rarely do you see Simmonds/Hartnell backchecking when a puck leaves the offensive zone, usally b/c they are behind the play. Briere has made some improvements but his game is built on open ice and breakaways and behind the goal line. If you have these type of players play a 2 way game, the offense dips further.

ANy chance of getting Getzlaf this summer (after buying out Briere)?

- PT21

Ducks are a lot more likely to let Perry walk then Getz. If they don't resign both. Regardless no more centers please.

They have scored, but for a team that is 8th in scoring does anyone really consider them a consistently hard forechecking team or a team that is consistently hard to play against?

They have stretches, but far too often they look like they did in the first and second period tonight.

- flyer_nutter

I remember when Craig Ramsey was fired, and Clarke said something to the effect of the Flyers being an easy team to play against as one of the reasons for change.

For 40 - 50 minutes a game, this is true once again.

That's my view. Trouble is, most of the guys that they'd sign would probably cost something similar to Bryz-just fewer years.

I don't agree with that. There seems to be this belief that a team can't be a top offensive team, if they're committed to solid team defense team wide. It's the opposite in my opinion. They'd become better offensively. The foundation is not in place for this team.

They're 8th in the NHL in goals for.

I think they're even higher than that but it's deceiving. They have scored 2 or fewer goals 13 out of 21 games. They seem to come in bunches when they come.

They do, but with better 200 foot play, that should even out. They get hemmed in when they play badly and blow all their energy in their own end, and have nothing left to press attack.

Toronto tonight was in 2nd gear for 75% of the game, and the Flyers still get hemmed in and had to waste effort on backchecking that would have been needless had they just played better in moving out of the zone.

EDIT: So, yes, offense is an issue, but it's not a talent one.

Just to clarify, You don't have to focus on defense first, but you have to focus on it. Year in and year out, the teams that play both ends of the ice are the best teams.
