As for the patches non suspension I think it was the right call, Mcdonagh saw him coming and tried a risky play in which he turned into him and tried to make himself small to avoid the hit. The result was him getting flattened against the boards, if he turns and prepares for the hit or takes the puck and heads behind the net he's fine. I think this falls squarely on his shoulders and a lot of plays like this do, players are trying to make risky plays along the boards and get destroyed in the process.
