He's been pretty consistent over his career. He actually played better in the 2008 playoffs than in the 2009 playoffs. Take away that Cup and he's probably viewed as what he is: a good goalie, not a star.
- NickTheKid87

id have no problem with that assessment. although for every softie he gives up, he more often makes up for it with a robbery that only a select few can make. however, im sure most people would rather have the security of knowing that their guy can make the saves hes expected to night in and night out and concede the spectacular ones. although i will say this: despite the win totals, goaltending for the last few years of this penguins team is not an enviable job

who was the last elite player on the flyers?

Claude Giroux. Before him Peter Forsberg.

Edit: And Prongs.

I think the Cup is what made Fleury overrated. He is a good goalie, no doubt but ever since he won that Cup, people started calling him elite. It's not Fleury's fault people started using that label.
- NickTheKid87

The Pittsburgh D on the 08-09 is very underrated. Not saying Fleurie wasn't great that year, but he had a fabulous defense in front of him.

Gonchar at his prime, Letang just coming up, with Orpik, Scuderi and Hal Gill as the physical guys, and Eaton and Goligoski as the sixth.

Great balance of size and shut down and two top offensive defenseman.

I really believe this was the actual case.
- JoeRussomanno

True story: I walked into the ACC a few years ago - held up my ticket and they scanned the bar code, and told me to walk in. So I take about five steps, still holding my ticket in my hand like a dumb-ass, and right in front of me is Walter Gretzky.

So I blurt out "Wally - nice to meet you" or something to that effect. He motions for me to give him my ticket. I'm not sure what the hell he wants, but it's Wally Gretzky, so I'm not about to say no.

He takes my ticket, whips out a black sharpie pen and autographs it. I thank him, trying really hard not to giggle.

Like, why would I want Wally's autograph, on a Leafs ticket for a game that has nothing to do with him or his son?

To be honest, I've never really understood the whole autograph concept.

slow start or not, giroux definitely belongs in the highest tier that one can designate to players right now. some definite mental lapses, but if that discredits him then youd have to toss malkin out as well.

I think Forsberg was. 75 points in 60 games in 2005-06. That's 103 points per 82 games. He still had it but then the injuries starting to kick in for good.

People are taking Giroux out of the elite talk but I still believe he's a top 5 player in the league. He can still create offense out of nothing and has outstanding vision. He's coming around now too.
