Inconsistent maybe, but the second unit is simply pitiful. My question is to Lavy...when I watched the Pitt/Philly game the other night, when the Pens were on the PP Crosby, Malkin, Letang, et al were out for almost the entire PP. Why don't the Flyers use that same strategy? And I don't buy the fatigue issue either as the Flyers have only played 2 more games than the Penqueens! - aantny88
And Crosby finished with 27 minutes TOI, 1 assist, and a nice -3 with 7:27 of PP time. |

Few Thoughts:
-Bryzgalov is not the primary issue, and honestly the summer of 2013 is not the time to buy him out. The options this summer are Jimmy Howard, Nicklas Backstrom and Mike Smith. They each have serious questions surrounding them that are as big as any of those surrounding Bryzgalov.
You're not going to get a discount on any of them, and there's another year they can wait on a final compliance decision on Bryzgalov. It also gives them more time to look at potential trades so they don't have to overpay in FA.
-I know Briere has the NMC, but as Tomahawk pointed out the other day, Briere willingly went to Germany during the lockout and signed a deal that would have kept him there for the duration of the season. I think if a contender was interested, it's no longer a foregone conclusion that he'd say no.
As for value, it's dependent on a lot of things. The NMC will limit the number of suitors. Briere could be spending the next 3 years with whatever team traded for him. That, too is a factor, because acquiring Briere does carry a hit of $6.5mm for another 2 years. That's significant. A team trading for him could buy out Briere, but that's not cheap, either.
-The Flyers issues, IMO, come from their 200 foot game, not their offensive talent. It's not easy to score goals when you spend 45 second of a shift trying to clear your own zone. Adding a Corey Perry don't solve that.
-As far as the coaching staff goes, I'm at the point now where I'm totally ambivalent if they make a change. I'm not certain it'd help, but I don't think that, at this point, it'd hurt, either. - Jsaquella
Isnt the inability to clear the zone the issue they had against two playoff series against pitt, which inspired homer to go out and get Pronger?

It played a role, for sure. But so did not having a number one defenseman, losing the leadership of Jason Smith and being impatient. |

With each passing game it becomes more and more obvious that this team has tuned out this coach. Perhaps Lavy has become the new Ken Hitchcock: great coach, but time to go.
I've never been a fan of Terry Murray ... but with our less than stellar defense, and a goalie who doesn't steal games, maybe it's time to go back to a more defense-first philosophy. - FlyerGuy
I think they have too much offensive talent to go back to a defense first philosophy. Also, I don't know if the team has the right mix to play that type of system. |

Crybaby was poope against the Flyers and that wasn't even my point...Lavy should have G and Voracek on both units if the second unit is that bad. |

Sucks to gamble on 3 different players and lose! I give him credit for trying, but when you put all your eggs in that free agent basket, sometimes you come up empty. I sincerely hope he doesn't do anything stupid like trading the youth of the team for aging vets, ala Bob Clarke circa 2002. - aantny88

This shortened season is a good opportunity to quickly reboot. A few months of pain and we can get some good assets in the draft. Trade off whatever vets we can for additional assets. Fill in the holes with UFA/trade this summer with the added cap space and assets. |

thanks. Early stages of sports fan alzheimers setting in. Used to remember precise lineups of games up 10 years prior. Now... Oh how youth is wasted on the young. |

Take out replace Flyers with Capitals and take out Giroux and insert Ovechkin and that would be even more true. |

Not the point. Bryz has played at a higher level more consistently. He can be the goalie the team needs but they can't leave him out to dry. He can only do so much. He isn't the problem here. It's just a lot more convenient to blame/scapegoat the goalie when you don't understand or choose to acknowledge the real issues. |

So, say they buy him out after next year...what established vets are out there that are going to be better and more affordable as the cap (and salaries) are going up accordingly?

Its poop like this that makes them so predictable.. Last year they had three to worry about, jagr, hartnell, or giroux could bury that thing... |
