Quick is obviously better. But people are talking as if Bryz = Leighton. - KGBflyers10
Quick might actually be the next Ryan Miller: one incredible year and a bunch of good years. I think Quick is destined to become the most overrated goalie in the league, a title which Miller currently holds.
This is not 2004. You can't just compare players without taking into account their cap hit and length and age. - phillydentist
Yes, you can. We're talking about how much talent a player has. Cap hit, nor length have anything to do with this discussion. Even age, at this point is irrelevant, Bryzgalov is in his prime and considering he's a goalie there is no reason why he should keep his level of play beyond the age of 35.
But if you really want to consider these points then I would ask you to look at the over team's play in front of said goaltenders. Chances are most of the Stanley Cup winning goaltenders since 2004 have been goalies of which they've had a pretty good defensive corps. The Flyers struggled mightily to properly give themselves enough depth on defense during their Cup run in 2010, and theyr'e being burnt now.
Everyone complains about getting younger and faster in certain positions, but some of you need to realize that you can fill a roster out with so much potential, but when it is all said and done, sometimes you need to give time for those players to grow. We have good players on the roster right now, young guys who will be quite special in the league, but they have to grow. They will get beat, burnt on plays, shut down from time to time, but that's the learning curve. Simply dumping guys after a few years to "Get younger" will never allow you to properly build a Cup-contending team.

But you can't hold it over a guys head either. Bryz's value isn't great and it may never been if he doesn't win a Cup here but how much better value would you be able to get from a UFA goalie of lesser talent?
Unless there's a plan to replace a guy, all you'd be doing is making a change for the sake of making a change, which is usually a bad idea. - Jsaquella
If you don't buy him out by 2014, you are stuck with him for the rest of his contract. He is untradeable with that contract. That outweighs anything else you can say. PERIOD.

Then who do you replace him with? It's an easy question.
If you go the FA route, you're likely paying another questionable guy similar money. If you got with a trade, you're giving up assets to replace him & likely paying a significant cap hit as well. If you get a younger, unproven guy, the cap hit is less, but you're again trading assets and it's possible the kid falters.
So, who do you replace him with? Just saying to get rid of him and worry about it later isn't a good answer.
I don't know about Quick but I'd say he's in the same neighborhood as Price.
Thing that a lot forget is this club got to game 6 of the finals with a Boucher/Leighton tandem, they can do that and more with Bryzgalov. If people don't realize that their being biased imo. - JoeRussomanno
Thanks for making my point... That team was more experienced and alot better than this team and you have to also admit everything fell into place in those playoffs. Look at the teams that got knocked out early that we didn't have to play
