Here's my take on Ovechkin: When he was at his best, he played a style that no human being could sustain. He played such an over-the-top hitting style, skating almost out of control and shooting from a wider array of angles. When he started to be more of a perimeter, stationary player he lost a lot of what had made him such as a special player. But if he kept playing the other way, he'd have gone the way of Eric Lindros in terms of his body betraying him prematurely.

Not sure, but the timing correlated more or less to his return from a shoulder injury during the 2009-10 season (the first significant injury of his career). He was noticeably less aggressive when he returned, and pretty much has been ever since.
