Yeah, Feds and McGillis had the goals. Pretty sure Desjardins had an assist somewhere in there. What an awful memory. - BoomGoesTheCoburn
...and I had to go look it up...Marty Murray also had a point. Disgusting series.

Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov
Q: You had pretty close to a shut out there, what happened on the last one?
A: He shot it and the puck got over my glove and he got the quicker one.
Q: Had a real strong first period, looked like you were very confident, were you more confident today than you’ve been the last few games?
A: No I’ve always been confident.
Q: In practice today, you threw the stick. Has there been a little frustration there?
A: No it was for fun, I just want to.
Q: In reference to the previous question: So Lavi (Peter Laviolette) came over and I don’t know if it was a light hearted comment or what?
A: You’re going to have to ask him, I can’t hear him. With other guys shooting pucks and the boards, it was very loud.
Q: Do you generally throw the stick for fun?
A: Yeah once in a while. Sometimes you want something right? Sometimes you wake up and want something.
Q: How big was this win for you guys because you had been struggling?
A: It’s a good way of putting up points. We’ve been in this discussion before. It’s very important – two points – and to continue to be in the playoff race or else. It was a good effort by the team. The bottom line we’ll see how we’re going to perform. We’ve been in this situation before. Would be game next game we going to go and play against the next opponent. We’ll see how it goes against Ottawa (Senators).
Q: Why do you think that’s been, why consistency has been difficult?
A: I have no idea you’re going to have to ask the coach. He handles the team, he prepares the team, and maybe he has answers. I’m just the goalie. I’m here and my job is to stop the puck.
Q: What does Simon (Gagne) bring to the team?
A: He plays very passionate. You know we don’t see him many games in the West and I don’t know he plays a lot. Seems like he had fun tonight. - bmeltzer

Flyers LW Simon Gagne
Q: First game back, a goal and a win, could you imagine a better script?
A: Not really, I guess. Especially after what happened yesterday. I was flying late last night from L.A., I tried to sleep a little bit, but at the same time I was so excited to be back and it was hard to fall asleep. I tried to get a nice night of sleep, but at the end I wanted to come in here and get a big win. Scoring that tap in goal, it’s a good scenario for sure.
Q: Where you at the point where you were so disgruntled that you just wanted out of there?
A: I was patient. Especially winning the Cup there. They gave me the chance come back and play in the final, the last four games. I was ready to wait and see what happened, but in my mind it was something that I did talk with my family and my agent that maybe the next step would be to see if they could move me somewhere because I was not playing. They didn’t have to do that; it just shows that they are a world-class organization. They did find everything they could do to find me a place and find exactly the perfect place where everything started.
Q: You’ll be 33 years old on Friday, some people say that you are getting long in the tooth. What do you have to say to those critics?
A: At the same time, I’ve been in the league 13 years. I still have some good hockey left in me, but at the same time the end is coming. I got the experience, that’s something that’s on my side. I have the experience of winning the cup in L.A. Even here when I was here in 2010 when we went to the finals. I have a lot of experience in the finals. We’ve got a young team here, that’s the first thing I did when I came here, I said “Wow, that’s a young team.” You know what, we are still battling for a playoff spot. I got some good hockey left, I may not have played a lot in L.A., but every time I was in the lineup, I felt good. I felt good tonight, so the more I think I’m going to play, the more I’ll get better. I’m excited to be back.
Q: Is it a relief of having more of a defined idea of what you’re doing here, compared to what you were doing in L.A.?
A: Yes. I got a call from Homer [Paul Holmgren] yesterday and talking to Laviolette about what my role is going to be on the power play. I’ll know exactly what my role is going to be, and as a player, you’ll need that. It was the tough thing in L.A., I wasn’t sure what my role was and I didn’t really understand why I wasn’t playing. Now it’s behind and now it’s time to focus on the future. I like the chance that I’m having from the Flyers and the coaching staff. |

He looks like he's waiting for someone to high five him and when no one does... He fist pumps instead. It's like walking down the street, tripping, and covering for it by pretending you wanted to start jogging all along. |

I just hope the stick thing at practice today doesn't become any sort of a major story tomorrow.
Clear as day, I remember a game early in the 1995-96 season where Ron Hextall had an awful pregame warmup -- not a morning skate, 20 minutes before the game -- and couldn't stop a thing to even get the feel of the puck, Intense competitor that he was, it quickly started to bother him. Finally, when Kjell Samuelsson and Shawn Antoski ripped long-range shots past him in succession, Hextall didn't even wait for the line rushes. He left the net for Dominic Roussel to take over. Hextall proceeded to shatter his stick over the bench, slam down his mask and charge up the tunnel. Oh, and he had a really good actual game in an easy win against Ottawa.
The little pregame tantrum was long forgotten before the game ended and never even got a passing mention in the next day's papers. Nowadays, it'd have been used in the lead-in on the NBCSN broadcast, been all over NHL Network, the postgame interviews and talk radio the next day. |

Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette
Q: Was this the exactly what you were looking for?
A: I thought guys from the first shift played hard and played smart. They were tight defensively. We got a chance in the offensive zone. There was shoot movement and lots of opportunities.
Q: Can you talk about Simon Gagne’s first game back?
A: I thought for Simon flying through the night and getting here and coming back in, a lot of times of when you come back into a building that you either left or was traded back to, sometimes the night takes over. I thought that Simon had a real good game both defensively and offensively for us. Under those circumstances, I thought he did a good job.
Q: You had some step forward and step back games this season. Is there any reason for you to have confidence that this will continue?
A: The bottom line is we finished this month 8-6-1. We’d rather be 15-0 but we’re not 0-15 either. Sometimes we get too focused on the ones that you lose and lose sight of the big picture. Certainly, there are things this month that we could have done better but it was the first month that really put us behind eight-ball. Now we look at it, we get in the month of March. Again, we had some things that we were dealing with that we didn’t do a good job of overcoming or we needed to do better and we didn’t. The month of March now presents itself with 12 games in 30 days. I think it’s seven at home and five on the road. This is an opportunity for us to have a good month, a big month. Certainly, tonight can be a starting point for us where we can look back and say ‘OK, this is where we move forward.’ It was a good start tonight. We need to continue to build on it and look forward to a big March.
Q: Obviously there is more to a more to Max Talbot’s game than scoring goals but was it nice to see him get his first goal?
A: Again, there has been a lot of talk about Max and the fact that he hasn’t scored but Max does a lot of things on the ice. I think when you get a player like Simon [Gagne] back on the line like Jake Voracek was last year, it brings a different element offensively to the table. We thought Max was doing a good job because if you go back a couple games when the checking line was together, they did a phenomenal job. It was Coots [Couturier], Max and Zac [Rinaldo] and they played a tremendous game. They didn’t get on the score sheet but they did a terrific job. I think it’s just a different element when a guy like Jake Voracek was on there or a guy like Simon. That’s not to disrespect anyone’s game but it just brings a different element. They are different players that go on the line.
Q: Do you think Harry Zolnierczyk’s hit was worth a major?
A: I didn’t, I think it was a clean, hockey hit.
Q; What did you think of Ovechkin’s attempt to take Danny’s [Briere] head off?
A: I haven’t looked at it to see whether it was dirty or illegal. Harry’s [Zolnierczyk] I did see. I thought it was just a good, hard hockey hit.
Q: You think this was one of Ilya Bryzgalov’s sharper games in the last few weeks?
A: I think he was sharp tonight especially early on. They had a power play where they had some opportunities. There were some tricky plays through the slots, a couple of re-directs. He was sharp early. There wasn’t a lot of work, maybe ten quality chances but early on when you want your team to build the lead and to shut down the opponent, you always need saves from your goaltender. I thought he was sharp early and made a couple of big saves.
Q: When you look at your first two goals tonight and Scott Hartnell was directly involved. Is that what you were missing when he was gone?
A: There is no question. Like I said, there are things you are working to get through the first two months. When you take a guy who was leading the team in goals with 37 out of the lineup, he brings a physical presence on the ice and in the locker room his leadership as well. If you get all of that back, it’s an addition to our club.
Q: Was there any concentration on jumping on a team that played last night?
A: We’ve been in those shoes before. Sometimes everybody’s intentions are good but you’re trying to get oil out of a rock. Washington came in and they kept playing until the end but it’s just difficult. They played an emotional game against Carolina last night and played a real good game. They had to travel through the night and catch a fresh team. We’ve been in those shoes. They are not easy shoes to walk in and they kept fighting until the end of the night.
Q: Do you think the addition of Simon Gagne and Harry Z’s speed made a difference?
A: For sure. I think Simon brings a lot to the table. Not only his speed but on both sides of the puck. Every time Harry is in our lineup here, he has provided a lot of energy. |

Very true. It was a beauty. Funny thing was -- this was still five years before I got credentialed, so I was in the stands at the Spectrum for that game -- I told my buddy before the warmup started that Hexy was generally much calmer now than he was as a young player but you know he can still go off. Sure enough, 10 minutes later....
