Funny thing was -- this was still five years before I got credentialed, so I was in the stands at the Spectrum for that game -- I told my buddy before the warmup started that Hexy was generally much calmer now than he was as a young player but you know he can still go off. For folks who want to see what a real cheap shot/dirty hit looks like, take a look at the elbow to the head of Ben Smith that Dustin Penner just delivered. Smith didn't have the puck (was nowhere near it), Penner hit him from the blind side, with a chicken wing elbow right to the head. Smith had to be helped off the ice. No call on the play. Refs completely missed it.

And that same refs blows play dead seconds later as Smith is lying on the ice dazed. Yet somehow the ref has no clue as to how he got that way.

One reader proposed what he thought it would take to get couts and it was more along the lines of gagner, paajvari, smid and a 2nd. I think that's a better evaluation of value of couts, but I'd still decline if I was homer.
