I believe the term AD used for Giroux during the 2010 Finals was "no-name plugger".

Randy absolutely knows his hockey. I ride with him to practice in Voorhees frequently, and he knows his stuff about the sport. He's a lifelong Penguins fan, but he follows the entire league.

Randy is also quite the sports collector and has put together something very cool that's Flyers related: a huge binder filled with one hockey card of every player who has ever played for the Flyers. It's arranged alphabetically. In cases where a card wasn't available of a certain player, he'd find a photo and MAKE a hockey card to stand in.

I consider Randy a friend and he's always been in my corner professionally. But he does have a bit of a quick temper.

I just don't like people who block people that disagree with them. I can understand nuking somebody who is a complete jerk, like I was to Barkann following his interview with Bryzgalov, but I don't feel I did anything like that to Dater.

I simply asked him if it made any sense for the Flyers to trade Couturier for Luongo as he suggested, used no profanity and didn't call him an idiot or anything and boom, blocked.

As I said with Miller, I can't recall any interaction with him and found myself blocked.

It seems to me, that I'd want interaction if I was a writer, or at least people to read my stuff and give me page hits.

Thanks for the background on Randy Miller. Glad to hear that he does like the sport. That doesn't always come through in his work.

Also, his little public row with Greg Wyshnyski last year didn't exactly clothe him in glory.

Emrick is considered one of the all-time best in the business among his peers. His prep work and knowledge of the game and its history are second to none.

He's also a tremendously considerate human being. Years ago, I wrote an article for NHL.com about the "Voices of the Game", and Doc called me immediately after I requested speaking to him. He was in between meetings and had only 15 minutes, yet he gave me every single second of that time and told me to feel free to call back if I had any other questions.

In that 15 minutes, I learned a LOT of things I never knew about the business and gained a whole different perspective on broadcasting. Emrick makes an extremely difficult job seem almost effortless.

Another Doc story: After he was let go by the Flyers to bring in Jim Jackson, Emrick took Jackson out for lunch and gave him some pointers about the nuances of broadcasting in the Philadelphia market. He didn't have to do that, but that's just the type of person he is.

I'll also hasten to add about Emrick is that he played an important role in Mark Howe finally getting inducted into the HHOF and he keeps beating the drum for Fred Shero to this day.

In and out of the booth, Emrick is one of the all-time greats.

Remember we talked about this a while back.. Three games into the season I believe.. I had mentioned that he had been a healthy scratch everygame so far.

Question:
Does anyone think Briere would wave his no trade at the deadline, if the acquiring team was willing to guarantee him a buyout at the end of the season.

If the Flyers are not one of the top 8 seeds by the deadline, there is no point keeping Briere, especially if they plan on buying him out at the end of the year, plus I'm pretty sure Boston or any contender with cap space would love to have him for a playoff run.

The other interesting thing would be if he is traded and then bought out, the Flyers then could resign him for a much lower cap hit next year.

From reading Seravalli's column today, it seems that Briere would prefer to stay, but the quotes didn't flat out say he'd refuse to waive the NMC.

If they're out of the race, and can move Briere, or any veteran that a contending team wants, I'd absolutely move them. I think Briere's value would be hurt by the NMC, as it limits a bidding war and the two additional years left on his deal. The salary isn't much, but the cap hit stays at $6.5mm

A team trading for him either has to carry the hit or give him a compliance buyout and pay him $833,333 a year fro four more years.

Briere says his heart's in Philly and he doesn't anticipate playing anywhere else.

I've always liked Doc, but I do think he's lost a little bit off his fastball. However, he gives a balanced broadcast. You never get the impression that Emrick is pulling for one team or another and he's ecstatic when either team in the game he's calling makes a good play.

Emrick is still the best US based broadcaster.

I inferred this because, as a single dad, I kind of empathize with Briere not wanting to move his boys.

As much as I enjoy listening to Doc, as he is 1000 times better than Jim Jackson and probably the best commentator in all sports, and I don't have to be annoyed by Steve Coates, I despise Pierre Maguire and Eddie Olcyzk. Those guys constantly kiss the rear end of certain players like Sidney Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin and every other supposed superstar that doesn't wear Orange and Black!

If you can get past McGuire's unabashed love for players, he has a lot of insight to offer on the game. And he definitely knows the game. Such as the analysis he offered of how the Pens lat Wendsday were trying to attack the Flyers in the offensive zone by getting the puck deep, to take advantage of how the Flyers were defending. And their at times suspect coverage away from the puck.

This stuff is why Butsy needs to be here - it would take an hour to Tweet all that.
