I'll never understand the rationale for the Dipietro deal, there is no way to make sense of a deal that long unless you front load it.

if the Islanders signed him to that deal with worrying about the salary cap in future years then why didn't they buyout Yashin when they had the opportunity to do it with the amnesty clause?

Waiting to buyout Yashin after the amnesty period let them get to the cap floor every year, so that cancels out whatever rationale you could make that the Dipietro contract was made with the salary cap in mind.

if I'm the Avs GM, I hold off matching it until the last minute to make Calgary think I'm going to let him go, then match it. No brainer. The second year of the contract is 6.5 mil which is way too much for him, but it's one year. Match and trade him next year if you don't want the hassle of resigning him.
