Trade deadline comes and we trade Nabby... DP is back, Someone gets injured out of Nabby & Poulin.. DP comes back. He's not gone till he is either retired, bought out, or traded.

Not a good comparison. JT has already proven to be a point-a-game player. DP was far from proven when he signed his deal. I think a lot of unproven players would take a 15-year contract for millions of dollars.

Which begs the question...a goalie coming off a .900, 3.02 season is worth $2M more than $4.5M/year? I think the understanding was it was an overpayment at the time with the potential to be an underpayment later...still a big gamble that favors the player far more than the team.

There's no questioning it was a gamble and a dumb one at that. Strongly disagree on the overpayment at the time though. Goalie salaries were climbing fast and as I mentioned, Lundqvist, who was seen on a similar level at the time, took over $6 million.

The point of mentioning JT was not to say they were anywhere near on the same level but rather, would JT have commited to a career long contract with THIS franchise below his market value. Based on the face-palms we see on the bench, I doubt it.

My wife has dealt with agoraphobia with panic attacks and depression more then half her life, I have dealt with her & it for over 2 decades & I still dont get it. Its completely irrational and she knows that, but she cant do anything about it.

This is a common answer from folks who have no clue about the tolls of true clinical depression. You've been in and out over the last year...he's been in and out over the last FIVE with people cursing his name on a nightly basis.

I can't dismiss the idea that he's possibly being a self-absorbed drama queen but in light of what you see with atheletes who have taken their own life, being brave or the opposite had very little to do with their end result.

I battle depression on a regular basis it is a demon I cant get rid of. I have thought and attempted the easy way on occasions. I have two beautful children and I am not remarried and got myself out of it. I can feel the pain of the depression, but us fans picking on him is part of sports. We boo everyone including KO and I doubt he is contemplating that

For once I agree with you. There should be no jokes or downplaying this. Nobody makes up the fact that they are depressed.

First off, I hope above all your ability to have overcome such things remains. Absolutely agreed that it's part of sports but based on your own past issues, you can probably understand that rationale doesn't really play into those thoughts and outside pressures can only make it worse.

Nope there is no way around I actually am feeling bad for the guy. Everyone says but he has a hot wife and money coming out of his ears. When you are depressed that means nothing it is like that dont exist. Been there already

no I thought about that after I wrote it. I mean when I went through my deepest depressions people just looking at me would take me to the next step. I know if Iw as being booed and named called during those times hate to say it I would not be writing this now

hate RDP all you want as an athlete; the guy is a human being, and YOU of all people who has/does battle depression should be sensitive to that and not look to rationalize that its "part of sports"...thats very upsetting

I think you're mixing timeframes a bit. Lundqvist signed his deal in 2008, after posting good numbers for three years in the NHL and winning a gold medal in the Olympics. In fact, he had signed just a one-year deal right before that. Lundqvist's worst year before signing his contract was better than DP's best year before signing his. Whatever people thought about DiPietro's "potential," $4.5M was not an underpayment by any stretch for that player at the time of that deal. In fact, if it had been a normal, say, two-year deal, it would have been quite an overpayment. The "risk" for DP was that he could possibly develop into a player that would be worth more.
