Avs should take the picks. They ain't making the dance and neither is Calgary. Take the picks and have two early 1st rounders in what is supposed to be a deep draft. Not to mention the additional picks. - Lexington Flyer
Agreed. Great return for O'Reilly, who is showing he's probably going to be a headcase throughout his career anyway. |

Leave it to a team like the Flames that have been in need of a rebuild for years to give an offer sheet. - ob18
Well, I mean, why would they need those draft picks if they intend to rebuild? |

It amazes me that team still has fans. I would have went nuts and walked away years ago. - hereticpride
They just won a Stanley Cup 25 or so years ago. |

They could rebuild around him especially with Iginla most likely on his way out. They will get some of those picks back if they decide to trade him at the deadline. - stveshdy
With Feaster you know they wont tho. |

They could trade Iginla, Jay-Bo, and Kippy to get back some picks. |

If they get O'Reilly I don't see why they wouldn't at the deadline. They need to go into a different direction b/c what they are doing isn't working. |

They should be planning to do so either way. I don't think O'Reilly is a bad piece if you're looking to rebuild (based on general consensus, I really haven't seen much of him at all). I just think that's a BIG salary to hand to a kid who broke 50 points once, is all. |

This woud be a no brainer for the Avs if he was going the way of Cheechoo. However, they know O'Reilly is going to be a stud. They have played without him all season so it might be worth the risk to let him go.
Calgary has no choice. They need a number #1 and a two way stud like him. - stveshdy
I don't know that O'Reilly is ever going to be a stud and a #1 Center. I would lean towards not.

Right now they'd pick 7th, O'Reilly isn't bad but I'd rather have that pick. |

Probably sooner than later. If he was planning on rebuilding he wouldn't have just tossed away a top 5 pick to get a player for two years, who by all signs is going to be quite tough to re-sign to a good deal. |

Totally agree. Two high 1sts give the Avs tons of options. |

Yup, even with O'Reilly they need so much more and if Colorado let him go now Calgary wouldn't pick till round 4 |

If the Flames can indeed pry O'Reilly out of Calgary, this will be a big win for the club as it currently stands. It's a massive boost to their core. They're one of the league's thinnest teams at centre. O'Reilly immediately becomes their number one guy, and gives Jarome Iginla a bona fide running mate. |

Well depends on what mocks you go by, some have the Flames currently 4th others 7th. |

His potential is as high as any Flyers youngsters. Thats my opinion though.
I think its a great move by the Flames. |

I think he's a nice young player. But he is not a player I'd want to build my team around. Nor would I want to commit that kind of money to him.

Either way, the Flames pick and Avs own 1st probably gets you the 2nd overall if you want it bad enough. Avs could end up with someone wayyyyy more talented than O'Reilly that way. It's a no brainer for me. You're just going to have to go through this mess with Ryan again in two years anyway. |

Thats exactly what the Flames are doing by making this move. |
