I think the Flames are going to committ to him which is why they put in the offer sheet.
- stveshdy

So they your statement that the Flames are in a good spot because it's two years, is moot.

What picks are they giving up?

The 1st round pick isn't a loss b/c they get O'Reilly.

Depending who else they trade they could get more picks back.

- stveshdy

Whoever else they trade doesn't offset anything, to me, because they could trade that player anyway.

From what I understand, they're losing a 1st and a 3rd. So that's one less prospect, an acceptable loss if O'Reilly is the caliber player you feel he will be (this may come across as a jab, I promise it's not). But you also only get a year and change with O'Reilly now, as opposed to the three year entry level contract. So I think there's something tangibly at risk here, yes.

They have the option to do what they like with O'Reilly. Thats a good spot. It's better than not having him IMO.

No guarantee the player drafted at #7 is going to be as good as O'Reilly. The Flyers trade 3rd rounders every single year. At that point in the draft its more luck than anything.

I cant do it anymore. Good luck.

My final thought is this. Flames are nowhere close to competing for a Cup in the next two years. Give me the (likely high) draft pick I can control for the foreseeable future over the guy that just held out cause 5 million wasn't good enough for his 50-somepoint season.
This guy is going to be an absolute nightmare to sign long term.

There isn't any guarantee, you're right.

What the Flyers do with third rounders is irrelevant, though. I would put the cutoff for 'low round pick' at after the third round, personally.

Will see what happens. I understand what you all are saying but I don't think it's a bad move by the Flames.

Well since we can't see what would happen with the draft picks. There really isn't all the information available needed. Obviously the Flames think it's better.

And what happens when this 2 year deal is up?

Desperation smells like a mix of drakkar and stale beer and right now, Jay Feaster reeks of it.

Haha, don't knock drakkar, on the right guy it can still rock. And any girl under 18 has never had experience with it so should stand you in a good stead.

I heard the hold out wasn't because of money, but the alternative isn't any more savory to me, as an imaginary GM.

More likely Feaster reeks of kielbasa and sauerkraut.

It's always about money. His Father's comments were very telling. The holdout would definitely make me question his character if I was Feaster.
