I like the move by Calgary...showing their fans that they want to win now. There is really no downside IMO. If they get him, they finally have a #1 center which they don't at present. 2 years...yeah lots of money but it's only 2 years. so they lose a first at best they'd find a guy like O'rielly if they are lucky.

If they match - no loss. draft is a crap shoot and the flames rarely draft well.

worst case scenario they see they won't make it at the TDL and trade iggy to the highest bidder and hopefully get a first back.

Well he'll be their #1 Center. But I don't really view him as a true #1 Center. I think there is a lot of downside to paying a player that kind of money this early in his career.

Wait til they try to sign him long term. Keep the 1st. It's like to be top 7 anyway. Get a kid you know you can control for more than a season and change.

The sad thing is, I wouldn't be amazed if Colorado matched. The return they wanted for O'Reilly was higher than a 1st & 3rd.
