Guys....for those that would frequent Ek's lockout threads....remember when BuffaloHardHat was preaching how the Sabres were going to win their division?
In a bizarre twist to an already unusual story, Sportsnet.ca has discovered that the Flames were not only in danger of losing 2013 first- and third-round draft picks as compensation if the Avs hadn’t matched the O’Reilly contract, but they also would likely have had to surrender the player before ever getting him in uniform.
That’s because O’Reilly would have needed to clear waivers before joining the team’s roster.
The unsigned forward spent part of the NHL lockout playing with his brother, Cal, for Magnitogorsk in Russia. According to Metallurg coach Paul Maurice and KHL spokesman Shawn McBride, he appeared in games on Jan. 21 and Jan. 23 – both after the shortened NHL schedule was back underway – which meant that waivers were required before O’Reilly could return to the NHL as a free agent midway through the season.[/I]

WOW, crazy. Did not realize Cal and Ryan were brothers.

That would have been stupendous.....Imagine that the Avs were awarded the claim and Calgary's picks
1. Jay Feaster is an unbelievable moron who doesn't know the rules that govern his job.
2. That the Avs and Flames had a gentleman's agreement that the Flames would sign O'Reilly to an offer sheet and the Avs would instantly match - Jsaquella
Both are legitimate possibilities and both may still be true regardless.

Had Colorado not matched, yes.
This screams one of two things:
1. Jay Feaster is an unbelievable moron who doesn't know the rules that govern his job.
2. That the Avs and Flames had a gentleman's agreement that the Flames would sign O'Reilly to an offer sheet and the Avs would instantly match - Jsaquella
Interesting
but if they had something going like #2, the 2nd year part of the deal is still incredibly dumb

I think it will help them a lot to have the majority of the back to back games already done.
Those are brutal.
I think also they are a playoff team, maybe even win a round or two if the goalie gets hot. - Marc D
There's too much talent on this team to fail miserably. I don't know, I just have a really good feeling that the rocky start to the season, along with some of the young guns really finding their game lately, adds up to a real show of character down the stretch. I don't think they're a cup competitor, but I think they can make the playoffs and make a bit of noise. If they do, I think it's worth it as a growing experience for a young club in its second season (since the earth shattering trades, that is).

On #2, why wouldn't the Avs just sign him instead of using Calgary as a middle man?
