Does Mathers have any offensive upside whatsoever? Is there an offensive skill he brings to the table that would enable him to hold down an NHL job?
- johndewar

He's had a 4 point game this year, but his offensive impact is minimal.

Mathers is one of the toughest fighters in the OHL and is the prototypical energy forward with the size and strength to fill that role. A defenseman during his youth hockey days, Mathers does possess a big shot and decent hands but his skating and agility will need to improve if he is to make the move into pro hockey. Mathers' work ethic is a plus and he is popular with teammates.

I hate that they take injury into account. Sometimes, guys get hit from behind and are lucky not to get hurt. Other times, guys are hit on much less dirty plays and happen to go into the boards awkward enough to get hurt. The hit itself should be what's punished, not what the result of it was.

It's like the Feaster thing with the O'Reilly offer sheet. People saying he dodged a bullet. The Flames organization did, but not Feaster. He and his crew STILL signed ROR to an offer sheet when ROR was waiver eligible. It doesn't matter if Colorado matched, it's still a really dumb mistake. He shouldn't be judged on the outcome of the OS but on the original decision to sign ROR to one.

Agreed, see my other post for how I'd like to see injuries handled.

Mezzy can't get back soon enough. Adding Mezzy to the back end can only improve the team in all areas. All though the Flyers special teams of late has been DYYY-NOOOOOOO-MYYYYYYYTE!

We just have to be careful not to get impatient. He came back early from an achilles, then the shoulder. While he is a definite upgrade even hurt over Foster and Gervais, we should be wary for at least the first few games.

One good hit and that glass shoulder of his could shatter.

Bill, do you think Cousins has any fair trade value right now? Or does his pending case sort of put everything on hold? I'm wondering if a team might get a little wide-eyed over the kid's numbers and be willing to overpay a little for him. Just spitballing possible ways we could either move up in the draft or possibly add another 1st.
- hereticpride

Until the charges against him are settled, Cousins will likely have no real value.

Can you see a team giving up a good player with a guy up on sexual assault charges as a key piece of the trade?

He has 10G/28Pts to go along with his 125 PIM, +1.
If you want to use Rinaldo as a comparison, his highest totals were 10G/30Pts with 191 PIM, +18.
Take the +/- with a grain of salt, as Peterborogh has a host of guys at -18 or worse (Mathers is tied for 5th on the team).

So basically, yeah, very Rinaldo-esque, at least as far as the stats go. I haven't had enough time to watch him play.

No doubt.

It was nice to see the Flyers win a 2-1 game.

The Flyers play the Rags tomorrow and if they want to make the playoffs they need to beat the teams that are below them in the standings.

The nice thing about Rinaldo, stats aside, are that he is a pretty fast skater.

If Mathers was going to play an agitator role, you'd like him to not be a battleship out there.

He lacks Rinaldo's speed and skating ability. If Rinaldo skated like Mathers, he'd be a career AHLer.

Mathers is much bigger, a true heavyweight fighter, who has decent hands in close, but doesn't play the role of a chirpy agitator. I'd say he's more Sestito, except in the bit I have seen, Sestito is a better skater than Mathers.

13 Games in March. It gives them time to physically and mentally recover. Time for practice. Time for a lot of things to get their minds right.

People say a lot of teams are ahead of them with games in hand, and that is true. But now they will be the ones playing the brutal schedules. Lets see if they can achieve .500 playing that many games in such a short period of time.

I expect a big month. Fresh legs of our own vs. their tired legs for a change.

Other teams are catching up in games played, and the Flyers are still in the thick of it. They need to continue to play well and pick up as many points as possible, regardless of who they play.

The 2-6 start has made staying close to the 9-5-1 pace that followed more vital.

Harry Z should have gotten four games no matter what. He was coming off of a game where he through a very solid hit with little time left on the clock... You know the conversation was that, even though it was a good hit, he needs to be smart about it... Whats he do? Goes head hunting his next hit.
- jak521

Yep. It's stuff like that that lands players on my list. I wouldn't lose any sleep at all if he doesn't get a call up to the team after his suspension is over.

There were already plenty of stories of Z being in Lavi's dog house as it is. I would be surprised if we saw him again this season.

I am impressed, for the most part, with their play over the last stretch of games. The special teams has really come to gether after a dreadful start to the season.

Coming into the season i expected more downs then ups. They weathered the strom of a brutal early schedule and now need to take advantage of the next few weeks.

I was watching that game on Game Center and as soon as I saw Ward go down I turned to my son and said " Leighton may be traded."

Oh, because I thought with Harry Z and Eric Wellwood around, we were pretty well covered with 4th liners with no hands.
