If I could get Oliver Ekman-Larsson for Couturier and a 1st, I'd do it. Big two way centers-even ones who play at a Selke trophy level at age 20-are less rare than a 21 year old franchise defenseman.
- Jsaquella

I'd do this too. CBJ gave up more for Carter than we will have for OEL if this deal went down which is ridiculous considering the players involved.

The problem is the Flyers have not drafted a great defenseman in like 20 years. Their chances of getting another Couturier is 100x more than getting a #1D in future drafts.
- phillydentist

The best defenseman the Flyers have drafted and developed is Jimmy Watson. So, they have never really drafted a great defenseman

OMG I agree with you in principal!!!

Edit. I'm not even being sarcastic! I doubt if the Flyers can draft an OEL (especially with their history, but a Couturier is another thing entirely. They are great at developing forwards, as we know.

- NickTheKid87

In Principle too!

Holmgren is a champ at drafting good forwards and flipping them for more.

Flyers have no track record with doing the same with dmen.

I don't meet with people who violate the hockeybuzz code of conduct, so I am afraid you will never get that chance.

Shea Weber- 2nd round
Duncan Keith-2nd round
Kris Letang-3rd round
Chara-3rd round
Next tier:
Brian Campbell-6th rd
Alexander Elder- 3rd round
Enstrom- 8th rd
Yandle-4th rd

Can go on with Boyle, Giordano, Girardi all undrafted. PK Subban, Justin Faulk, and Justin Schultz are young guys taken in rd 2 with great potential to be #1 guys. Big two way centers almost never make it out of rd 1 let alone the top 10 in a normal draft.

- psuhockey

Crosby-1st overall
Stamkos-1st overall
Malkin-2nd overall
Giroux-22nd overall
Tavares-1st overall
Getzlaf-19th overall
Thornton-1st overall
Lecavalier-1st overall
Toews-3rd overall
Staals-2nd overall
Kopitar-11th overall
Richards-24th overall

Zetterberg-7th round
Datsyuk-6th round
Bergeron-2nd round
Pavelski-7th round
B. Richards-3rd round

It works both ways. Sometimes you find diamonds in the rough, sometimes you don't. Flyers haven't been particularly keen or patient to develop young D men either.

Hmmmm. Sounds familiar. I wonder what moron has been preaching this on hockeybuzz for the last 2 weeks? Oh yeah.... Me. Glad to see at least someones eyes are opening a little
- SMS4016

Again Captain Reading Comprehension, it's not the trading Couturier for OEL that's the issue(except that Phoenix wouldn't likely do a straight up one for one trade)....it's the trading Matt Read for Jonathan Bernier, they buying out everyone so you can overpay Corey Perry part that most disagree with.

The problem remains that Couturier is not enough on his own to get one of the top guys like OEL, and the second tier are not good enough to justify giving up on a 20 year old with so much potential.

For some reason, I feel the urge to pick up a case of Bud Light.

He's a solid defenseman. Nowhere near what was expected of him when drafted, but he's managed to have a solid career.

This is a scary reality.

And it has cost the Flyers a ton of money if you think about it, in terms of free agency dollars. A good businessman (and we can all agree Ed Snider is a good businessman) would put resources into developing good defensemen to keep these costs down.
