On Rangers broadcast John Giannone Rangers "Between the glass guy" said Staal was hit directly in the eye, and was taken to the hospital. Update coming tomorrow.

I still can't understand how these guys aren't all wearing visors. It won't protect the eyes/face against every possible thing that could happen, but it'd protect in a lot of situations. That'd have to be worth it

Yeah, the still shot I saw seemed like it got him in the eye...I hope he's ok. That kid's had a tough go with the concussions and now a potentially bad eye injury.
- Jsaquella

I think he will be ok. I don't wish serious injury on anyone, (except Tortorella) Rangers just seem to have a horseshoe up their ass when it comes to injuries. I would never want Staals career to be over, or for him to have any vision issues, if he had to miss the remainder of the season with some fractures in his face, so be it. But it won't happen.

The game has changed. Visors should be mandatory.

The guys I have heard speak about it, say they have never worn them and they have trouble seeing the puck when it's in their feet, as well as the fact visors fog up. To me, it's a no brainer when you are talking about being hit in the eye with a stick or puck. Not only can it end your career, but it can effect your quality of life. Chris Pronger, unfortunately being the example.

You wouldn't think so. I hope he is ok. That was scary. The puck being deflected at least slows it down somewhat.

I remember when JR got blasted in the face with a slap shot at MSG. That was really scary, didn't hit him in the eye, but it broke a bunch of bones in his face iirc.

That's right. There have been so many injuries need a slide rule to keep track of them.

An injury away from adding Lilja to that mix. Don't sleep on it.

I've heard guys say that too and it sounds like one of those things where they tried one for 2 minutes and were all "blah blah can't see the puck it isn't for me". Nevermind that anymore, tons of top scorers wear them. Obviously they see the puck just fine. Hopefully it doesn't take many more of these incidents for most guys to say "ehh if half the league wears them I can figure it out too".

Or the league should just mandate it and protect the players, thereby making the product on the ice better by having less of these injuries.

Visors are required in major junior and the AHL, too. It's not as if they never wore one growing up.

I used to be anti-mandatory visor, but my stance has changed over the last few years.

Yup. A friend of mine went to that game, his first in years. I asked him to kindly refrain from going to anymore games.

This is where you get off course. You seem to think that you can't be an aggressive fore-checking team and play well defensively, and check in all 3 zones. I assure you that you can. It's not a choice between one or the other.

Did you not see how the Rangers solid checking and breaking up plays in the neutral zone led to odd man chances for them? And goals?

- MJL

I can agree with this. A team must be able to check tightly in all 3 zones and be defensively aware at the very least in all 3 zones. Which leads to counter rushes where the aggressive forechecking and speed will thrive. One doesn't mean you have to forego the other.
