I get that but I mean what's the difference between developing 2 forwards then trading 1 for a dman and developing a forward and a dman? - NickTheKid87
And the issue isn't that the Flyers don't develop good dmen, it's that they don't DRAFT them in the first place. It's not an issue of patience but more scouting and/or ideology.

I understand that but it's not like they have been wasting 1st rounders. Their track record with forwards has been great. Hard to complain.
They are also harder to find them in the draft. Some of the best goalies in the league were drafted outside of the 1st round, defensemen too. - NickTheKid87
Right and that's why I said I'd rather have the Rangers scenario of having home grown goalie and dmen and buying forwards vs the Flyers way.

I guess, but that hasn't really worked out for them either. Those big 3 guys haven't been all that good and last year they couldn't score in the playoffs to save their lives. Their PP is awful too.

The thing is I won't be surprised at all if NYR did a LAK run this year and win it all. They don't have a Drew Doughty but they have all the other pieces that LA had. They are at least closer to being a Cup winnner/contender makeupwise than the Flyers are.
One mock draft has him going 14th so we might not have to suck that much! - NickTheKid87
Heres the scouting report
One of the best defensemen of his age group, Ristolainen is a top-prospect for the 2013 NHL Draft. He is a calm player with good two-way ability and a mature style of play, though his defensive awareness still needs work. Ristolainen moves the puck with confidence and though he's not a big-time hitter, he plays the body and likes to get physical in front of the net. He also has good mobility. Ristolainen has an excellent frame and has gained a lot of strength while playing in SM-liiga. He is good with the puck and solid defensively, but has also displayed ability to work the powerplay. (Matias Strozyk, 2012)
Maybe Voracek would like to play along side Malkin, when your team starts unloading everyone send Voracek our way. Im sure we will give you a 7th or 8th rounder for him.

Luck plays a role, too. Lundqvist was a late rounder. Girardi was an undrafted free agent. McDonagh was acquired in the Gomez trade.

I agree with that. I think the Rags have the best team on paper and I could easily seem them going on a run in the playoffs. I really hope they don't though.

I thought it smelled funny in here....welcome to our misery..

I still like Ian White, and he's out of favor in Detroit.
Stick to the patchwork plan. No panic moves. See how it plays out. - bradleyc4
in the right role, he'd be an upgrade...if PHO would trade us OEL for couts + a reasonable add on, I'd do it...other than a similar value, I'm w/ you...

The Flyers have never subscribed to the "Let's dump everyone and suck for 5 straight years so we can draft in the top five and all the while hold the state and city hostage with threats of moving to Kansas City for a new arena" theory

i don't see a single, reasonable scenario where the Flyers trade Couturier for a defenseman, and are a better team in the next 3-5 years because of it.
