People on here will be cursing this trade for years to come. - mayorofangrytown
Not I. Even if Schenn doesn't get any better and JVR turns into a 35 goal scorer, I wouldn't be upset. I don't judge trades based on hindsight. At the time it was a fair trade and that's all I will ever judge it on. Same goes for the Patrick Sharp trade, etc.
On the "flop" play, he was coming all the way from the bench to try to cover for Gus' horrid D change. He had no chance to get into position, and was just trying a desperation move. Not really his fault imo. It would have taken a hell of a play to break up that rush coming all the way from the bench so late in the play.
Yes, he did make a bad change later in the game, and should be held accountable for that. But the flop play was not really his fault. He had to gamble there and he lost. He was put in a no-win situation by the bad change. - BringBack25
Yes. It was a much better play to fling yourself face down on the ice than to stay on your feet and keep the forward to the outside. Instead he was skated around like a bean bag chair. It was a horrid decision to try to block a pass and take himself completely out of the play. Just putrid.

Crucify Schenn if you want (and it seems like you do), but the real issue on that play was the failure to get the puck deep and execute a D change properly. You clearly don't like the way Schenn played that, but in reality there was nothing he could have done to stop that rush or keep the player to the outside since he was so far out of position to begin with due to the poor D change.

I think maybe you should watch the play again and envision him still on his feet and maybe your opinion will change. It's not 100% that there isn't a pass and a goal but he eliminated himself completely.
This isn't the first time he's done this ya know? He's becoming a serial flopper and that's what's making me nuts. There's a time and place for that play and he just doesn't know when that is yet.
It's also my pet peeve. I got into an exchange with Bill over the exact same play Coburn made several games ago so it's not Schenn I'm crucifying in particular although he had probably the worst game I've seen him play this season.

Right and that's why I said I'd rather have the Rangers scenario of having home grown goalie and dmen and buying forwards vs the Flyers way. - phillydentist

That goal to me is all on B.Schenn. If he gets the puck deep with under a minute to play, there is no bad change, no ridiculous slide by Luke, and no lack of poke check by Bryz. The Flyers walk into intermission with a 1 goal lead. There is a disconnect right now between forwards, defenseemen, and the coaches because this wasn't the first time for a bad turnover during a defense pair change. It actually happend a few times in last years playoffs too against Pittsburgh that I can specifically remember. And if my memory serves me right, the Briere, Schenn, and Smmonds line was on the ice then when Jordan Staal scored.
Toronto got the better player in JVR (more skill, bigger upside) but the Flyers had to make that trade. My only question is did Holmgren get the best possible dman for a trade chip like JVR? JVR had an injury history and stretches of inconsistency so I don't know.
The next time JVR has a 20 game scoring drought, the deal will look a lot better for the Flyers.

JVR didn't have much value at the time, relatively speaking. I'm not sure you could have gotten a better player of Schenn's age and upside for him.

kimmo tacklenen is guilty of this too. not so much this year, but a lot last year. rarely nullified the pass which often ended up in the back of the net, and took himself out of the play.

exactly once the luster of the new team wears off and he struggles a bit, they will turn quickly on him in toronto.

The Flyers do it more than any other team I believe. Although admittedly I watch the Flyers all the time I do try to catch two games a day if possible. I don't like sitting there yelling "Get the hell up!!!!" at my TV while I'm watching a hockey game.
