I'm only looking at Murray or Paddock as an interim candidate. I think they would help in the development of some of the younger players' two way game. - Jsaquella
I would much rather have Murray than Paddock as an interim. Paddock has not had any coaching success in his last two stints (Phantoms, and Ottawa). Granted, he didn't have a high talent level in Adirondack, but he also didn't teach the players to play the right way and get them to play as a team.
And in Ottawa, when the team was struggling, he threw his players under the buss in the media. I remember one interview (wish I could find a link) they showed on TSN or someplace like that when he basically said "I can't do anything with these guys. I don't know what to do next." Even if that was true, you can't just blurt out stuff like that to the media.
In short, Paddock has done nothing to impress me with his coaching/teaching ability. His big success was an AHL title in 1988 with Hershey. Since then, nothing. And never any success at the NHL level. Murray has his flaws, but he's also had much more NHL success in his coaching career than Paddock.
EDIT: Sorry - Paddock won another AHL title in 2000 with Hartford. Still no NHL success. |

When Lavi's time finally runs out, I'm going to be sad. Sports fandom can be a cruel mistress sometimes. - BulliesPhan87
It will be sad. I was all for him when he was hired and I think he's a good coach, but the situation is what it is. Either he's not making adjustments or the players aren't executing them.
What seems to be his greatest asset is his biggest weakness now...that desire to push the attack. |

Outside of Laviolette's Cup win, he and Murray have similar track records as coach. After that Cup, Laviolette didn't make the playoffs for 3 straight years.
Granted, the Cup win is a big qualifier, but Murray has a better track record with younger players and development. - Jsaquella
The Cup is just a small thing.
But the development of younger players is what makes Murray a great option for now. |

Same here. It's become rather apparent reading things here and elsewhere that Lavi may not be losing the room, but rather his job. It's not up to him to fill the roster, but he needs to get the roster he's given playing sound hockey.
As has been written here, it's too predictable and - with that - beatable.
Ugh. I hate it because I was stoked when they hired him. I wanted him above all others and 2010 was magical. |

Do you take the risk with an up-and-comer and see if you get the next great coach or do you go with Terry Murray, who will not be anymore than he already is? No offense to Murray of course but he hasn't had the greatest track record. I wouldn't mind him as interim and then replacing him with an unknown in the offseason. - NickTheKid87
Murray is a teacher.. i dont bring an unknown because that can really (frank) with development....at this point i go with what i know...murray will be adequate for this and next season. |

Going back to my post that led to a similar response from you, realize that coaches WE don't know are not necessarily coaches that the Flyers organization doesn't know. |

I'd prefer Murray, but I'm looking at a guy for 3 months. I think Paddock would be adequate for that short run.

Kind of a chicken or the egg situation, but his coaching has become stale. The Rangers have made a science out of beating his Flyers. They're not the only ones who can see glaring weaknesses. At this point, I'd like to see a Murray type brought in to instill some defensive discipline. He may not be the coach that gets this team to the top, but they won't get there with some of these habits regardless.
But we've had some great (frank)ing times with Lavi behind the bench. I'll never forget moments like his timeout in game seven versus Boston, nor standing on the boards screaming at the Pens' coaches. |

I don't think he's that great a coach, to be honest. The best thing about him is that his teams have always been hard to play against. In Buffalo a lot of the development was done at the AHL level. |

Possibly the most overrated coach in the history of the NHL. Just because Buffalo was too stupid to fire him years ago doesn't mean he's a good coach. At least in this case, longevity <> quality. No thanks. |

This. I was stoked when he was hired, too.
And it's not his fault alone. But the pieces aren't there, despite the efforts of the GM, and Laviolette hasn't adjusted well enough to make the new pieces work. |

Maybe. Using Paddock would be simpler since he's already here, and they wouldn't have to make any changes to the Phantoms. Still not a fan, but I can see how he could be the path of least resistance. |

I enjoyed his talk about the importance of passion or inspiration or whatever in 24/7. I know it's kind of cookie cutter bullpoop, but it's kind of true. Look at what that kind of emotion did in the first round of the playoffs last year. He's made mistakes, but I've always gotten the impression he was just as much part of the team playing the game as any player on the bench. |
