There's plenty of surgery being done on goals against but they only scored two PP goals last night. Nothing 5 on 5. Nothing.
- mayorofangrytown

They couldn't get a thing going 5 on 5. Simmonds had a chance on a feed from Briere behind the net and there was that Hartnell semi-breakaway but those are the only really good chances I can remember.

I got a strange feeling we play uninspired sloppy no heart game against Pitt and lavi gets canned Friday. Hope I'm wrong but Can see this happening.
- SMS4016

They seem to play better in Pitt but I gotta believe the game gets heated and we come up with a great win.

I said earlier that a 5 or 6 point night from Crosby isn't out of the question.

as you posted earlier, the flyers record vs disciplined shutdown teams like NYR/NJ is abysmal. that's very telling and if we are following trends, those types of teams are winning the cups lately. add to that, the apparent lack of adjustments on a consistent basis...but also like you said, homer didn't get certain pieces.
- isaiah520

He didn't, but I look around the league and see other coaches doing more with less. The two examples I keep bringing up are the Devils from last year and the Senators.

You have to adjust as a coach. There's difficulties and injuries along the road. You have to adapt or die.

on the 2nd goal, Schenn was laying on the ice waving his stick trying to block the puck which could be distracting for a goalie
- vejim

Why? Would he be laughing too hard to see the shooter skate around the defnseman?

Well it's not that. He walked around scheme them cut freely to the centre and around him. Bryzgalov could have dived to his left but that's it.

Yes but the options for long term help are going to cost an arm and leg, or one of the core young guys.

Likely the best they could do is a vet re tread or an overpayment. Or just hold the course and maybe miss the post season.

I would like to see them hold the course and not trade away youth for once.

- Marc D

they'll def have to trade non roster guys or picks at least. sometimes the cost of making the playoffs today, is not worth it long term...

I think Bryz and then Coburn are gong to miss Grossmann the most. Bryz and Gross have developed a strong bond in a short period of time. It's actually kinda nice to see that. And we all know that Coburn just plays a better game when Grossmann is on the ice.

Sid hasn't really lit up the Flyers since 2009-10 so he's gotta be due. He's also red hot (11 points in his last 5 games).

Same story for the last two years against the Rangers. Good forecheck, hem the Flyers in their zone, they waste all their energy trying to clear, rinse, repeat.

Then when the Flyers got out of the zone, the Rangers clog the neutral zone and the Flyers have no answer for that.

Lavi is handicapped by the team he has to some extent.

But I agree with you, he hasn't adapted to win against good teams that can forecheck them effectively.

Pittsburgh is the one team that you don't have to worry about playing uninspired Hockey against. Think back to the recent games against the Pens.
And why have the Flyers have success against the Pens? Because the Pens have been willing to play a wide open and undisciplined game against the Flyers. The Pens have talked about it, such as after the last game. How they're aware of how the Flyers want to play. And how they need to play differently against the Flyers.

- MJL

You're right, they talk about how they realize it all the time, i'm still waiting to see them transition that realization into the games.

Sorry Mark, but I can't agree with that. This Flyers team has more talent then a lot of NHL teams. Many teams are doing far more with less.

Well that's the issue. If the Pens play the way they need to. And the Flyers continue to play the way they are. No contest.

He is handicapped to an extent. But even last season when he had better talent on defense, they went 0-6 vs the Rangers. There was no answer to be had.

The trouble with that is, the Flyers have Timonen, Schenn, Coburn, Grossmann as a top 4. Ottawa's top 4 right now: Gonchar, Methot, Gryba, Phillips

The Sens are 5-3-2 since losing Karlsson, who was averaging 27+ minutes a night. That's winning despite a massive roster handicap

I didn't think any of the 1st two goals were save able at all. !st goal was 2 on 1 on PP where just like a regular 2 on 1 goalie takes shooter - Dman takes the pass, Bryz had the shooter but Grossman let the pass by. The second goal Callahan was at the side of the net so Bryz had to hug the post and because the Flyers have a tremendous Defence, Callahan just skated around Bryz. I did not see the other 2 goals. Flyers need to overhaul the defence. Coburn needs to go, Gervais, Lilja and Foster should never be in the line up. Homer has done a good job with the team but his cap management has been awful. I would not have signed Timonen for 6 mill. This D just needs to start from scratch starting with young guys like Gustaffson, Schenn and Bourdon. BTW what is going on with Bourdon? I'd get him in the line up unless he is hurt
