Can't agree with that at all. The Flyers could absolutely play the Devils or Senators system. Another misconception is that you need certain players to play a system. Not the case.
- MJL

I don't think this is a misconception at all. You can't play the same exact system with different players. That's asinine. The Flyers have different strengths and different weakness than the Devils and Senators. They could play a similar system tailored to the roster they have though.

Absolutely you can. All a system is a structure of play. Players strengths and weaknesses have nothing to do with it. The system that the Devils, Flyers, Senators play have been around forever and have been used by many, many teams. Lot of misconceptions of systems.

I don't see it as needing to play another team's system or style, I see it as suiting your style or system to take full advantage of your team's capabilities.

It's not a cookie cutter, you have to figure out what works best for your roster. I don't think the Flyers would do good playing a 1-4 style
- Jsaquella

size your roster up and adjust accordingly. i like lavy and there are certainly issues w/ the roster, but they are predictably bad in game/opponent situations...

Out of the loop today, the amount of accidents on the roads with the rain and wind is unreal.

Meszaros and Grossmann good to go tomorrow night, right? RIGHTTTTT??

- PLindbergh31

I read somewhere that when Grossmann walked out of the locker room last night he looked OK but didn't make any comments.

No real news on either that I have heard yet.

The problem is, on paper, the Flyers are more talented, especially with Michalek and Spezza being out.

Last year, when those guys were healthy and they had Karlsson playing 27 minutes a night, they were 4th in the NHL in goals per game. Losing those guys has caused their coaching staff to radically change their game to being a stingy, tight checking team, rather than clinging to a style that the roster is ill suited for.

That is what a good coach does.

I have to agree. It's time for a change.

How do you explain Lavy's system working incredibly well in 2010 yet being almost ineffective in 2013? By your logic, it shouldn't matter what players are in a given system, right? Or do you just mean defensive systems?

2010 They had a very strong group of two way forwards led by Richards, Carter, Gagne, Betts, Lappy.

They traded experience for youth and lost a lot of their better two way players.

Pronger also.

ehh.. they battled the same issues then that they are battling now. Hell the same issues of consistency and two way play that they saw with Stevens. Remember.. Stevens was fired and Lavy was hired.. it gave them temporary lift, or did it? The next season they played well for big chunks and then went flighty towards the end of the year, and then they were blown up. Same issues.

Thanks man. I'm sure it will be Messrs Gervais, Gustafsson, and the Lilster.
A deadly combination against Pittsburgh and Boston.

Exactly. The system was perfect for the team they had. You can't but the group they have now in that system and expect it to work (which it doesn't).

1-16 in last 17 games vs. Rangers and Devils.

That is hard to comprehend, or accept. Despicable.

Getting hot is always part of a Cup run. Michael Leighton & Brian Boucher were the goalies remember.

They barely made the playoffs.. Had it not been for that rare shootout win.. they would have missed entirely.

The playoffs were when guys emerged. Giroux turned into a bonfide star and Ville Leino set the record for most points in a postseason by a rookie. Pronger and Briere were fantastic as was Richards. Their role players stepped up as well (Carcillo in OT against the Devils anyone?). Everything clicked in those playoffs.

And then Leighton turned into a pumpkin during the SCF. Average goaltending in that series and the Flyers could have won. Niemi posted a below .900 save % in that series. He was average at best.

I was at that last game against the Rags.

I think it was Matt Carle of all people who tied it late in the third, then the Rags just played for the shoot out, and Briere and G scored, and then Boosh stopped Jokinen (or Jokinen missed wide)

Pretty ecstatic moment.

Chicago was the better team. They had to get rid of half their team that season because they couldn't fit them all under the cap.
