So what your saying is the players make the system, the system doesn't make the players?
- NickTheKid87

No system can work if it's not executed by the players.

I just view the system as a way of playing the game, whether it being offensive, defensive or a little bit of both. I think where we are having a disconnect is that with any system in place, you have to tailor it to the strengths of the team in order for it to be effective. Basically, putting the guys into a system that they can make work well.
- NickTheKid87

That's a general description of what a system. What I disagree with is your statement that a team can't play the exact system that another team plays, because they don't have the same players. That's simply not true.

Take the Devils. What is their forecheck system? 2-1-2, 1-2-2? Why do you need to the same exact players to play that? All teams play one of the basic fore check schemes that exist.

of course it is... he just said that certain players work well with certain systems and you are saying certain systems work well with certain players.. or the reverse.. same idea.

Semantics.

- jak521

That is not at all what I said. That may be your interpretation of it. But that is not what was said

Pronger hurts the most but this team was successful last year and there should be no reason why they can't play like they did last year, instead they are playing worse. The team is essentially the same minus Jagr and Carle. Jagr was good but he was done by playoff time, Carle was a big loss from last year. He was a guy who we had playing 20+ minutes a game, could move the puck effectively and was on PP and PK. Thats exactly the type of player we are missing. Timonen isn't the dman he used to be, he can't quarterback the PP anymore
- xShoot4WarAmpsx

I was as big of a Carle supporter as there was as a player. Add Carle to this team right now. With they way their team game is a mess. Wouldn't make a significant difference. He's a good player, but not that good.

They will all probably play against the Bruins, if not the Pens.

It doesn't sound like Mezzy is ready to go yet.

I was thinking about this on the way to work today:

The NHL, especially the flyers, is the most incestuous sport I have ever seen. Are we really thinking of bringing back terry murray? But then I thought: He's coached like 4 other teams between 1997 and now.
But who else is out there worth looking at for a coach, who isn't a retread of this organization, or someone else who is looking for a job?

The GM's can be awful and not get fired, minus columbus.
There seems to be no "fresh faces" coming into the league, either in the front offices or in coaching.

It just seems so weird to me.

If Laviolette goes, I'd want Murray just for the rest of the Season. Just to right the ship and put some structure back into the team, and to correct some bad habits. But for the long term, I'd want a a fresh face also.

If.... IF... they make a coaching change, I think Paddock would be named interim coach and then a different coach would take over next year.

Most of the good coaches that you'd want to hire are working right now. Guy like Dallas Eakins, who has done a great job with the Marlies, is under that team's control until the season ends.

Murray would be a stop gap, to instill discipline and help teach the younger players that two way play is important

I guess what I was saying is that because the players are different, the system will be executed differently, therefore the system is different.

a 1-2-2 forecheck is a 1-2-2 regardless of how it's executed. The level of execution doesn't change what it is.

That's true but certain systems work better or worse depending on the players. I honestly think we're just arguing semantics. I am added more variables to what I am calling a "system" while you are just using the basic definition. Pretty sure we agree conceptually.

It would rock if both grossmann and read could play. I don't want mesz to play yet because from all commentary he's made sounds like he's not ready. If foster plays I'll cry.
