I do think that if Pronger does retire the Flyers attempt to get the deal voided or be permitted to utilize a compliance buyout on Pronger.
The NHL confirmed to capgeek that over 35 deals are eligible to be nuked by a compliance buy out. - Jsaquella
I don't think you are allowed to use the buyout on an injured player tho right? He would have to be medically cleared for the Flyers to be allowed to use the amnesty buyout. |

In the case of the Flyers and Pronger, I think they might. - BulliesPhan87
I bet they'd make an exception for the Penguins. |

Yeah but would the NHL be happy with having a guy sit on LTIR for 4 years? - NickTheKid87
Why would they be unhappy? As long as it is not money outside of the system, they don't care. |

I also disagree with the cap recapture penalty.
And I'm not necessarily saying make it an exception just for Pronger, but allow teams to use one of their compliance buyouts on an injured/35+ player. That would only be applicable until 2014. - NickTheKid87

Just throwing it out there. Might be bad PR for the league to not let a guy retire one his own terms after suffering an injury like Pronger's. |

Nope, players who are injured can not be bought out. That is why the league stepped in with the Gomez/Redden rule. Those guys would have been forced to sit for a year, because their teams were going to dump them and they wanted to avoid injury risk. |

Understood...I'm worried about the dead space, too. Any fan would be. - Jsaquella
Yeah, it's definitely not fun. I can only imagine how his family has taken all of this.
Or...
Maybe, just maybe--Chris Pronger pulls the ultimate roundabout on the media. A day after his first interview "about how bad he still feels, and he thinks he's done with hockey", he comes back and goes "I'M BACK female dogESSSS *smirk*....hey tim *smirk*, how's it going? *smirk* Guess what? Not answerin' your question." *smirk*

A compliance buyout isn't money outside the system, either. It counts towards the player's share. |

Then what is the problem? Why isn't a player allowed to retire with class? |

I think the contracts signed during the old CBA shouldn't be penalized by the new CBA. It was allowed by the league and both the owner and player agreed to a certain deal. |

Yes but right now Pronger is on LTIR. Once he retires, and is bought out, his Cap hit will count for this year... and I don't think we have the cap space. Redden & Gomez are gone but their cap hits are still on their respective teams til the end of the year. |

I mean it screws over a team because a guy sustained a freak injury and if the player doesn't want to screw over his team, he shouldn't retire. |

OOO how sweet, "both teams are very good" "great hockey" why dont you just shut it. Go buy a Giroux jersey, that would complete your transformation. I would rather be burned alive than say anything nice about the Flyers or the saddest fanbase in the histry of pro sports. - nbartley9

I definitely agree with that. This rule should only affect deals signed under the current CBA. Those contracts were approved by the NHL. |

They wouldn't buy out Pronger until the summer. Until Feb 23rd, Pronger counted against the Flyers salary cap, fully and completely. |
