He didn't, and when that happens, the coach has to adjust.
Look at Ottawa. Erik Karlsson played nearly 30 minutes a night. Their system was predicated on that. Their coach has made the adjustments needed to minimize the impact of his loss, and done so in far less time than Laviolette had to make changes.
Laviolette has known since September that he was going to have a group of defensemen that were bigger, slower and not as good at moving the puck as he had last years. - Jsaquella
Don't disagree. So the Flyers will need to make a choice. Do you want a coach who can adjust and change when necessary or stay with the current coach and hope to fill the pieces with the right players? |

So you would like to go back to the style of play that Hitchcock, Murray, etc would play? - stveshdy
Murray stresses two way play, but he's not Hitchcock or Lemaire. Murray was a NHL head coach for 15 years, and in ten of those his team was in the top ten in goals scored in the NHL.
People have this notion that Murray would totally sacrifice offense for defense. His track record says the opposite.
I want a style of play that would win games. If they win games 2-1 and are boring, it's still a win. |

Ottawa's defense is Sergei Gonchar, an old Chris Phillips and a slew of guys who were career minor leaguers six months ago. They're missing their best playmaker and offensive player, their top goal scorer and the goalie who has played at an extraordinary level this season.
My argument is, the poor player performances are due in part to the way the coach has used them and in part to the lack of accountability the coach holds them to. - Jsaquella
OK I get the point, but I want to say something about the Sens.
The guys on that team and media have said that old Phillips has been their most consistent player this year. Methot has stepped up. Wiercoch (?sp) has been good and has a huge shot they use on their PP. The forwards they have are a nice combination of speed and grit. They have some very good top end guys still playing.
Their minor leaguers are way better then what the Flyers have in ADK. With Karlsson that team would be pushing Boston for the top.
Point I guess is the Flyers should not keep trading draft picks. |

Wasn't Murray the coach for the LA Kings last year before getting fired? |

I feel I've made it perfectly clear that I would have fired Laviolette already and brought in Murray as the interim.
It's not a systemic thing, either. It's an unwillingness or inability to change things to meet the changes and adjustments that the game forces.
It's not that they play an aggressive 3-2 forecheck, it's that he has no answers for teams that play a disciplined, tight checking or aggressive forechecking system that interrupts his system's breakout. |

Lets say they do make the change your suggesting. What if the Flyers bring in Murray and they still continue to play the same way? What do they do next? |

Look at Boston. Very solid two way game and good offense to boot. They play exciting tough winning hockey. I'll take that any day of the week |

got it any legal strategy in hockey is valid to use and you can't be stubborn and use the same thing every time and expect it to work
doing the same thing every time and expecting the same results is insanity |

That happens when you put players in the best position to succeed. This Flyers team has plenty of talent to be a solid team.

No, they shouldn't trade picks at all.
They're asking their minor leaguers to play 20 minutes a night. Eric Gryba has 9 games of NHL experience at age 24, and he's playing 20 minutes a night. If he was that good, why did it take him until 24 to make the NHL?
I forgot about Methot. |

I know others see it differently but I'd play out the entire season and if the team misses the playoffs, Make a change in the offseason. Let the new coach have a full training camp to make changes. |

Philly may have a fully intact blueline start the game today for the first time all season. Andrej Meszaros (shoulder) participated fully in practice yesterday and, barring any setbacks, will return to his accustomed spot anchoring the third pairing. - bmeltzer
