its all true - Marc D
Unfortunately I was too young to see them play live. I've watched DVD's of the old days and that team was bad ass. |

My mom still talks about the old days when the Flyers were the Broad St. Bullies. She always says how that team could play hockey any style. They could score, fight, play physical, shut you out, etc. They could do anything and nobody played like Clarke. The story goes on and on... - stveshdy
She tells the truth. As much as folks talk about their toughness, they forget how talented the Bullies were. Dave Schultz was a 20-goal scorer and that's disproportionately overshadowed by his PIM's and toughness. Those teams were built from the goalie out and their coach's belief was that "If you can't beat 'em in the alley, you can't beat 'em on the ice."
Man, I wish there was another Fred Shero out there waiting to take over the Flyers' coaching position soon. |

well, there's bound to be some rust
heard Leighton is back with the Flyers, hard to fathom exactly what that means |

How did Mez look? - Marc D
rough for his first few shifts, got better as the game went on. at some point he was out on the 2nd pp and got more shots on net than most of our forwards. took a couple of shoulder hits that made me nervous but he seemed okay. |

In here it's tame!
Most people here are at least willing to support the team. The talk radio & TV in Philly are little more than carnival barkers. Every goal allowed is weak. Every loss is because Giroux's a poopty captain. You never hear the coach criticized because he feeds the media quotes.
They fire up the morons and create the drama. - Jsaquella

I loved watching Kelly fly all over the ice.
That was a damn good team.
In the Russia series I thought MacLeish had more pure skill then any of the Soviets. |

Meszy's hurt(ing), Read's hurt(ing), Grossmann's hurt(ing), Timonen's hurt(ing), Hartnell's probably still hurt(ing), etc. Maybe Briere and Giroux are still not 100% from their German injuries? I might be missing more, but that's a lot of guys not at 100%. |

The first time I really heard people in the local media rip the Flyers was during the Lindros days. They got a pass, perhaps unfairly, because they were the best run franchise in the city-and it wasn't close.
Now, it's...visceral. They're looking for blood. |

My family members just won't let go of that team. They always compare the teams of today against that team. Always hear about how the Bullies wouldn't tolerate the garbage going on. They didn't believe in injuries and making excuses.
My favorite is how Clarke was a diabetic but was the toughest bastard on the ice. |

a sign of pathetic desperation...we'll probably lose on a short side squeegie after the 50 ft rebound. |

Yeah, saw that last game when Grossmann's kick led to Kunitz's goal. Were he not suffering from the LBI from the prior game, maybe he gets that out of harm's way.

There may well be. The Fog was a minor league coach for the Rangers. Maybe a guy like Jon Cooper is the man who can recapture that. Or a guy like Steve Spott from the CHL. |

My first favorite Flyer was Don Saleski because I was a toddler and his nickname was Big Bird. Loved his energy when I finally got to see him play. Clarke soon followed as my favorite after we received a "Bobby Clarke Stick" (replica in kid's size) and played hockey in our apartment with the radiator as the net, Dad as goalie, and a Playskool orange ring as the puck. Still, we looked at the guys on the roster and there was so much skill in Leach, Clarke, Barber, the Watsons, MacLeish, etc. Amazing days... I miss the 70's... |

Barkann's excuse about Bryz's salary justifies the treatment - and then Randy Miller's repeat of that - exemplifies what you're saying. Disgusting. |

Like I said to ob18 earlier, I'd heard of Spott during the lockout. I'm on board if he's the guy. I want someone ready to come up like Keenan was in the 1984. |

It was a different era, entirely. For all the talk of how some wanted hockey accepted as a major sport, many wanted it to remain a niche sport so it wouldn't be ruined by greed like the 3 major sports were. Now we have league welfare because there are too many teams, which were let in by greedy owners who wanted expansion fees to line their pockets. |
